Title: Donations welcome
Post by: dave on February 13, 2009, 11:20:59 AM
The site is taking a hit in bandwidth today, which will likely cost far more than our average month.

Donations are always welcome, however small.  If you enjoy the site, please do contribute.

PayPal here:

or if you prefer to mail a check (made out to me):

Thanks,
Dave

Looks like the forum today has more than doubled the record of "Most Online EVER," which if I remember correctly was somewhere around 450 previously.

Money is tight these days, but I'm gladly sending my $20 in beer money. Two things, though:

1. Just curious...what does it cost to run a site like this?

2. After this event in Buffalo, the Press and others will likely come to LiveATC first after any aviation incident in order to pull recordings from the archives.  So, this will happen again.  I'd hate to see the archives removed or go pay-as-you-go for members, but perhaps you could charge the Press for each download somehow?

It costs a fair bit for the total operation.  This includes bandwidth, hardware, and lots of hardware to put up some of the bigger Class B area feeds.

We try to manage with very few donations and advertising.  We get bandwidth donations, which help somewhat.  And the press has been coming here for a while, so this is not new.

My goal is to not turn it into a "pay" site.  But you would be surprised how very few cash donations actually come in.  It is a very small number.

Dave

Hi Dave,

I have bandwidth I can donate. I have a few servers co-located at an ISP in Toronto with spare bandwidth.

Feel free to get in touch if you'd like me to set up a reflector.

How much bandwidth does the site use in an average month?

I have a server colo'd in Indianapolis with a fair amount of available bandwidth that could most likely be put to use mirroring.

I thought I'd be able to get a donation in soon but it will be at least another week. How badly are they needed at this time?

Thanks,
Chananya

Chananya-

Don't worry about it.  Any contributions are appreciated at any time.  Don't feel pressured.

G'evenng Dave, others -- I just paypalled $50 and want to pose a challenge to others. Soon as I see posted here (after mine) promises to donate another $50 (totalled across however many people), I'll match it with an additional $50 of my own.

I really value this site, the system that Jason and Dave have set up, the efficiency, patience, and good humor they and the other feed-sponsors bring to it, and the postings from all of you. Even Simcoe was a blast. I mean he could have been a lot worse. And several of you guys did a wonderful job of laughing him off into the distance (so far).

Keep it up folks. It's a great site!

Phil

Thanks much for the donation.

I run the SJC feeds - had to get rid of tower due to cable TV interference.  Shame because my receivers are practically right next to the field.  Hope to find someone local in San Jose to pick up the SJC Tower feed again.

I'm ten miles from SJC. I could feed the tower if you like.
