Emergencies?
« on: April 05, 2006, 10:29:47 PM »
I've noticed in a few clips that as soon as a controler starts working an emergency that it gets really quiet and other traffic goes away.  Is this good editing or is there some sort of procedure for other pilots to get out of the way?

If a Mayday has been issued by someone.. all non mayday traffic is supposed to remain silent until told by station issuing the maday that radio silence can be finished.

From the Transport Canada AIM:

Com 5.11:

The distress call shall have absolute priority over all other
transmissions. All stations hearing it shall immediately cease
any transmission which may interfere with it and shall listen
on the frequency used for the distress call.

From the Study Guide for the Radiotelephone Operator's Restricted Certificate (Aeronautical) RIC-21:

Page 19:

Should radio silence be imposed during a distress situation, all transmissions shall
cease immediately except from those stations involved in distress traffic.

Examples: Imposition of silence on a specific station by the station in distress.

(Cessna C-FNJI is causing interference to distress traffic.)

I think, if required, another controller will take over the non-emergency traffic on a different frequency so that one controller is talking to the pilot in the emergency. I read that in a Don Brown article.

What clips are you referencing?  The clips in the "Audio Clips" forum of this site?

If so, then most clips (at least the several with which I have the most  familiarity) are heavily edited to remove silence and non-essential, non-emergency-related communications.

This fact does not, however, diminish the information about emergencies posted above by the others.
