air acraft is now landing 22r smoke in caban  pilots wearing mask  fire crews onthe ground hes on and 8 mile finle now at 8:30 est


ba18   ?  smell of smoke in cockpit

Was listening to JFK clearence/ground, told a plane that BOS was stopped due to emergencey

Last minute or so:
smoke not heavy, smell in cockpit,
fire equipment standing by, heat seeking equipment, will scan the aircraft at arrival.

I didn't get the carrier name

Call sign is Speedbird 184 - British Airways

Fire marshall scans aircraft, no sign of heat.
Crew says smell is electical, not much smoke
Taxing to Terminal

I caught the trail end of the convo from JFK clearance/ground feed. Thanks for clearing up what happened, now I don't have to wait for the archieve to go up.

At some point there was actual smoke in the cabin, and the crew were wearing masks.  Apparently it dissipated.  I didn't listen to the clip, but I was the controller clearing British to land and telling them the fire crew was on freq.  Most of the communications that goes on on our end is off freq, dealing with coordination with other controllers, etc.

Was this flight scheduled to land in Boston?  Also, what happens in case of a transatlantic in-flight emergency?  Does the plane land at the nearest airport or are there specific airports that are supposed to be used in case of an emergency because of runway length or firefighting apparatus stationed at the airport, etc?

The PIC's gonna determine what airport to land at, based on company regs, and the things you mention, like rwy length and what apparatus they have there.

jamall's right, this one was on its way to London.  I don't know where it was when the emergency happened, but musta been close to BOS.

They checked in with Boston Center a little after 8 P.M. and reported some possible trouble.  Then they were expedited to Boston, I believe.  Comms on the Center archive are incomplete since that feeds scans a lot of frequencies.
