Freq Request - Gander VHF Oceanic Clearance
« on: April 17, 2016, 03:35:15 PM »
Just inquiring to see if there is interest in setting up a feed for Gander Oceanic clearance. I think it would be beneficial for pilots in training to be able to listen to North Atlantic track clearance readbacks.  Here are a few freqs near Nova Scotia:

Sydney - 119.425
Stephenville - 135.05
St. Pierre - 128.45

Anyone else interested in listening to this feed?  Any Canadian friends in the area willing to set it up?  Hoping to get the conversation started.

Thanks again to everyone providing this service!

A dedicated feed for Oceanic clearances would be interesting. There used to be a feed covering it in Sydney but it has been gone for awhile now.

Some dedicated feeds for Moncton and Gander Center's high level airspace covering that area would also be interesting. I'm not located in the area but could donate funds to help get some up and running. Moncton, Sydney, St. John's and Gander would be places to start.

A new development...we have a reasonably good chance of placing receivers in Gander.

Initial draft feed/frequency list:

 Tower/Ground feed:
 118.100                          Tower
 121.900                          Ground

Approach/Departure feed:
 128.500                          Arrivals/Departures
 132.100                          Arrivals/Departures
 123.475                          Halifax FIC
 126.700                          Halifax FIC

Gander Center (2 feeds - need to figure out the right mix for each feed):
 124.175                          Gander ACC FL290 & Above
 125.900                          Gander ACC FL290 & Above
 128.500                          Gander ACC FL280 & Below
132.100                          Gander ACC FL280 & Below (Extended Range)
 132.600                          Gander ACC FL290 & Above
 133.900                          Gander ACC FL290 & Above

Not sure how accurate that frequency list is, but it is probably close.

Nice !

If it was me I'd split the Center feeds with High sectors on one and Low sectors on the other. Frequency list looks good unless there has been some recent changes.

124.175 is a published High frequency but I've never heard it used before and last time I was there no controllers could be heard simulcasting. Maybe a spare ?

Looking forward to the feeds. Thanks Dave !

Confirmed Frequencies for one of those Gander Feeds(HIGH ALTITUDE)

134.3,128.6,125.9,132.6,133.9,134.9,124.725 AND 133.425

Dave ONLY 4 of these frequencies are in use at one time but they are switched up from time to time.

Maybe we can add far NE MONCTON frequency 132.525 as well ?

I forgot to mention that Gander International Air Radio also transmits on 127.100 and 126.900 from the Gander location.

These two frequencies are used by Gander to provide HF frequency assignments and obtain SELCAL codes for the Atlantic crossings. Still done by voice and not datalink, for now. Much the same as the dedicated New York ARINC feed on 129.900 in the New York area for flights heading down to the Caribbean.

These two frequencies can be very busy during the eastbound rush so best to put them on a separate dedicated feed if possible. (Throw in some voice recognition software and use it to auto-tune the HF feeds with the current primary and secondary frequencies - now I'm getting carried away).

If 4 feeds can be utilized I think this would work nicely ....

Feed #1 Airport

121.900 Ground
118.100 Tower
123.475 Gander FIC (domestic)
126.700 Gander FIC (domestic)

Feed #2 Gander International Air Radio

127.100
126.900

Feed #3 Gander Center Low FL280 and below (also works arrivals/departures)

128.500
132.100

Feed #4 Gander Center High FL290 and above

133.900
125.900
132.600
124.175

As for adding all the adjacent Gander/Moncton high frequencies I don't know if this is a good idea ? There are about 14 more frequencies that could potentially be on the fringe of reception, with weak signals. The nice thing about Gander is when they combine these adjacent sectors the frequencies are cross-coupled so you would hear the aircraft loud and clear anyway. This would vary throughout the day and depend on the locations of the NAT Tracks. I think it would provide a better listening experience without getting a bunch of weak hard to read signals that could block out same 5/5 transmisson on the cross-coupled frequency. It would depend on the type of equipment and reception range of the Feed ?

My 2 cents (more if you need a donation).

Thanks, JetScan. Looks like a good plan and it is unlikely we will clutter the feed with Moncton frequencies. We will enhance coverage at Moncton instead.

Right now the possibility sits around 50/50 - contact me privately for more details.

OK I will drop a request to add 132.525(MONCTON) however in my opinion with terrain we would be able to hear est end of that sector.

Maybe if present this in a different way from GANDER HIGH ALTITUDE North to South Config

1.127.675
   132.4
   133.425

2.124.725
   134.3
   128.6

3.125.9
   132.6
   133.9

4.134.7
   132.05
   128.175

***AGAIN EACH ONE OF THE 4 ABOVE USUALLY OPERATES ON ONE FREQUENCY IN THOSE BANKS and adding them all may seem to be overloading but 4 FREQUENCIES ARE USED ONLY and with CPDLC happening it wouldnt be much of a cluttered feed at all**

reiterating that a HIGH ALTITUDE FEED WOULD BE ONLY OPERATING WITH 5 FREQUENCIES IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT.
DAVE I ONLY ASKED FOR 1 MONCTON FREQUENCY.

There are other requirements at this location besides Gander Center....but all input will be considered...thanks.

I'd say that restarting the Sydney feed (119.425) along with bringing up Gander and Moncton high sectors (e.g. 125.25) would provide great coverage.  Also of note is the freqs will be most active 2330-0730Z++ for eastbound traffic departing North America in the evening--outside of that the repeater could be used for other center freqs.
