Frequency Coupling at CYKZ
« on: June 26, 2007, 10:28:11 AM »
Although not actually streamed on liveatc.net, I thought I would let you guys know regardless...

The new tower at YKZ is now in use. This means that they have frequency coupling happening on ground/tower when only one controller is working.

If you hear ground comms. on the tower freq, or vise versa, this is the reason why.

124.8 Tower (119.9 backup)
121.8 Ground.

Great..!  But don't they have ground coupling before already?

BTW.. I was listening to them this morning, and I found there were some some echo feedback issues.  They probabily are fixed by the time I finished posting this message.

They did... however you would only hear one side of the converstaion (The controllers)... you now hear both the pilot and the controller on the freq.

In an email from NavCanada:

Quote
Effective on June 26,2007 with the opening of the new control tower in the southwest quadrant of Buttonville Airport the new facility will have the capability of “coupling frequencies” As users of the airport what this will mean to you is that you will now have the ability to hear transmissions from aircraft and the tower on other tower frequencies while you have only one frequency selected on your instrument panel. For example , if you are taxiing to a runway with the ground frequency selected and the tower has coupled frequencies you will be able to hear transmissions on the tower frequencies that have been coupled by the tower from all sources ( tower and other aircraft along with transmissions on the ground frequency). If you are in the holding bay waiting to depart on the tower frequency you will be able to hear transmissions on the ground frequency and the secondary frequency 119.9 along with the main tower frequency.

Normally the tower will only couple frequencies during a single controller operation. This information is being relayed to alleviate any confusion that may occur as a result of this new equipment. Your attentativeness on the radio frequency as always is required to avert any “step on” of other frequencies mainly due to the fact that you will be hearing all transmissions to and from the tower during the coupling periods.

Thanks bcrosby,

I also noticed now, after the switched to the new tower:

1)  Radio Signal strength seems stronger (new antenna or/and better tower height??)
2)  They swithched to a computerized voice for the ATIS info.  Forgot what that equipment is called.

Yeah.. the new automated ATIS sucks..

It takes FOREVER for it to go through everything, so slow... but all for the better I suppose.
