Great Flight Tracking Site
« on: October 12, 2005, 05:31:33 PM »
Hello all,

This site is just great for filling in all of the details on any commercial or IFR flight arriving or departing any airport. You can also see the aircraft's recent flight log and there are many different ways to sort your searches.

Enjoy!

i hate to burst everyones bubble on this tracker but ther is no zoom in on map feature and the list of arr/dep's of each airport is only limited to one page and true the flight routes are excellent and the addition of gen aviation and private business jets are cool but overall i wouldnt say this is a great site. If I want a zoom feature I use fboweb.com

Nevertheless, this is a really good site.

If you know your airspace and can span out enough, crossing this with Passur and liveatc is really cool. Especially with those Janet flights to Tonopah and Indian Springs!

Nice site!  Is there a live map?  Being able to zoom in would be nice.

Unfortunately, for the time being, the map is small and unzoomable. However, the site is new, and the administrators promise to offer a much better map in the future, while remaining to offer the service free of charge. Sounds like a win win situation to me....  :D

Janet's Exist.  Even ATC and FAA acknowledge them.  But where do they go once airborne?  They all have different flightplans but all end up in the same place....I always hear Janet on my scanner here in Vegas, and I hear them on Nellis APP as they pass the Ranges some times.

I hear them as well when I'm at my other office (read: settee area adjacent to 25L/R at KLAS). From driving up/down US95 and down to SoCAL, I tend to see the planes landing at KINS, KTNX, KPMD, and KBUR. I've heard of them landing at KVNY, but I'm not sure on that one. I also see them landing at KOMA and KOFF, which was something I really didn't expect to see.

I know they physically exist, but I also know that the employess etc dont talk about it. I once saw a show about area 51, where some idiot followed a JANET pilot back to his home. The guy slamme the door in the idiots face and wouldnt talk about JANET. Of course, JANET flys Area 51 employees into work every day from Vegas.

Also if you are that enthused (trust me there out there) about JANET flights you can take pictures of them on PUBLIC streets only.  I have personally seen guys go onto McCarran prperty right outside the Restricted gate and shoot photos and within 30 -90 seconds TSA is there with Metro.  They all give up and go home.  1 day one did not and he was handcuffed and most likely only escorted off of the premises.  And the Helicopter(s) for security come from nellis.  They have some housed at Groom and Indian and Fallon.  But when I worked at 66Th rescue Squadron we serviced a bird twice a week night shift all black no marking and no tail number.  (Pavehawk) Blackhawk Variant.  It was one of those, you don't ask question, just do what you are told.

Back on SUBJECT the best liveflight tracker I have seen is through AirNav.  http://www.airnavsystems.com/anlv/  Even shows Janets and all those darn annoying Helicopter tour company's to and from Grand Canyon

I honestly wonder how accurate these sites really are.  I was listening in on the feed a few weeks ago, and checked their status.  According to the site they landed on time at xx:xx... but, according to the feeds, that time came and gone and they were still in the air (not due to land probably for another 10 minutes or so).

Yeah, Sometimes it is off like it might just takeoff but its status is arrived, but in philly its fairly accurate. I've tracked many flights into philly and its really fun. Hey waht can you do sometimes? Its a Cool sight though.

I'm guessing it has to do with the flight plan?  ...if the controllers amend it and the server picks it up, then it'll pick it up?  The question is though - is it getting the data from the flight plans, or from "FAA-radar" as they claim?

Most of the flight tracking sites I have played with have a delay built in for security reasons. :-( I know of one that was 20 minutes.

The web authors of FlightAware have admitted in their site's forum that they impose at least a five minute delay for security reasons.

While that site may not match up with LiveATC's feeds due to this delay, it is still quite useful and practical for anyone following a specific flight.  Let's put it this way:  A five minute delay of displayed flight status will not at all affect one's decision to leave for the airport.  If you live that close, you can look outside!   :-)

I did follow a Southwest flight into Philly from listening to the ATC feed and it was right on the dot. Its a good sight though and I tell my friends to give me the flight number and track them.

I fly at KBFI, I live in Queen Anne (downtown Seattle). It is about 5 miles north of KBFI and a little farther North of SeaTac(KSEA).

I listen to KSEA over the internet here at work (BellTown, even more 'downtown' seattle). At home I got a new scanner and I listen to the KBFI stuff there.

The data comes directly from the FAA, and believe it or not, it's entirely free.    It is technically delayed, but not quite as much as you might think.  Moreover, a live feed which is almost truly live (minus propagation delays) is also available to certain users.

A lot could be done with that stream, as well as ACARs data, but it would require the talent of some good programmers as well as some serious funds!

Not quite.

flightaware doesn't cover my country (Australia) at all. But there's still hope that it will be almost truely global one day. Just like the internet.
