I didn't see this posted to the forums yet, but in case anyone is interested in learning a little bit more about the actual radar and communications systems behind ATC, Mr. Arun Reddy has a great article over at Ars Technica. Not too much technobabble, so it's easy to follow along if you're not as immersed in this world as some may be.
