Knowing them is one thing.. but I think the OP was asking how they choose them, and the meaning of the callsigns..

From the foregoing discussion you can see that there are a lot of different stories about how airlines got their FAA/ICAO call signs.  I don't think I could give a blanket explanation.  Best bet is google or wikipedia.  If you can't find a particular call sign that you want, ask here specifically.
