How much does it cost to set up a feed?
« on: November 15, 2009, 02:35:00 AM »
this is a general question:

Lets say I want to setup a feed but need to know how much to spend:

I live in Puebla, Mexico

for example, I buy a scanner at  Mercado Libre (down here is like ebay) and pay 38 USD, go to steren (down here is like radio shack, but better because they sell spare parts too) and get coaxial cable (15 metres at 10 USD) and make an antenna (PVC pipe, UHF connector, hanger wire all for 8 USD) so down here I could start feeding at a cost of 56 US dollars...

how much could someone else spend to start a feed?
please use real figures and real expenses and use a figure for top of the line NEW equipment or do as I did, using used and cheap equipment, so we can get an idea of how lucky we are that someone set aside that much money or effort so we all can enjoy all ATC action... thanks to all  8-)

New equipment does not make a feed "better."  From my perspective good feeds are those located close to the transmitter sites and using antennas that help pick up aircraft a good distance away.

Used receivers and minimal cost should be the goal - and getting a decent antenna up with decent coax cable.  An expensive receiver is useless if connected to a poor antenna or used in a location with high noise levels that mask signals.
