Interesting day in the southwest...
« on: December 17, 2008, 04:23:19 PM »

Rarity that you ever see Las Vegas at or near IMC, let alone snowing:

KLAS 172056Z 07005KT 1 1/2SM -SNRA FEW004 BKN008 OVC020 02/M01 A2991 RMK AO2 RAB36 SLP136 P0000 60000 T00221011 58027
KLAS 172032Z 03010KT 1 1/2SM -SN FEW005 OVC013 03/M02 A2992 RMK AO2 P0000 $

Last time I saw it snow in Vegas was the day I moved there in 1998.

In other news...

Quote
KLAX 172053Z 36004KT 9SM -RA SCT025 BKN055 09/06 A2972 RMK AO2 SLP064 P0002 60009 T00940056 56029 $
KLAX 172045Z 01005KT 9SM -RA SCT025 BKN055 09/06 A2972 RMK AO2 P0002 $

Don't let the winds fool you. East operations at LAX. They're landing and departing on the 6s and 7s.

So this should be a great day for feeds in the Southwest.

Looks like it has gotten quite a bit worse. Vir43 and a few others have diverted to LAX

The storm is moving up from the south with the heaviest precip still south of the city so it seems the conditions will be getting even lower than they are now.

Hey, maybe the feeder for LAX can change the feed around for a few hours for better listening in this crazy weather.

It's been a fun listen so far. Visibility went from 1 1/2SM down to 1/4SM, vertical visibility less than 200, causing the field to be under minimums for all of their ILS approaches. They lost the 25R localizer, the 1L localizer, and the LAS VOR at one point. Currently, it is a bit better, with being able to run ILS 1L arrivals, but they are only down to two runways now.

All SWA flights in and out have been cancelled, with more airlines expected to follow, with more diversions. Ground stop all day, no PDC, and holds stacked 7 high over BLD.

G/A have been trying to shoot ILS 12L at VGT and end up flying missed. Contact approaches have gone missed. GPS 30R has gone missed. The Clark County Dept. of Aviation is close to requesting the ATMs there to close, as the snow and visibility is going to get worse according to the TAFs. In my time in Vegas, there has only been one time that airport has closed, so you're seeing something serious here. this should make a great oen for the archives.

SAN was pretty crazy this week too.  Swapped back and forth between 27 and 9 a few times.  16 out of 20 landing attempts had to go around during the time I was sitting and watching.
