JFK Tower Emergency
« on: January 09, 2006, 07:38:50 PM »
This afternoon it sounds like there was a fire alarm in or around the tower complex and everyone had to evacuate.

Download the JFK Twr clip from today (1/9) at 15:30 and about 7 min and 20 sec. into it a controller states that they are evacuating. Pretty interesting stuff. Later in the clip I believe a helicopter checked in wondering where everyone is and a pilot relpied that they are either at a union meeting or there is a fire alarm. Good stuff!

Anyone else have any further information, please post!

Wow, that was interesting.  I bet approach was just loving that!  I lost count as to how many times Sikorsky 5ML called up.  Obviously they arent there!!!!

What a day for them.

So, what happens if there's a fire in the TRACON and they're required to evacuate?  What happens to all the aircraft?  I can just see the look on the pilots' faces...

"Whatever Tower, Cool Airlines 100 on ILS 26L with you..."

"Whatever Tower, Cool Airlines 100 on ILS for 26L with you.... are you there?"

"Cool Airlines 100 to Whatever Tower, are you there?!"

....

"Whatever Approach, Cool Airlines 100 - on ILS for 26L, I can't get any response from Tower on 118.0"

"...Approach, are you there?"

"Hello?  ANYBODY?!"

Um... so what happens when there's an evacuation?  Who takes over?  :)

Check ATC Audio Files for Clip the clip is approx 10 minutes long....

Here is the audio clip of 1/9/06 JFK 1530 with all the good stuff....It starts off with JFK tower telling acft they are evacuating monitor 125.7.....then Sikorsky 5ML calls in.  Between a period of 6.6 minutes Sikorsky 5ML calls Twr 9 times, and then an acft finally tells him the situation.  Twr was off approx 13 minutes....This clip is approx 10 minutes in length...

I finally got a chance to pull the clip out... really cool.  I'm curious what happened to all other aircraft who were given vectors?  I'll try and check out the other archive clips at that time for JFK.  :)

Well, I cracked open the APP/DEP archive feed and here were the highlights for me...

07:06 - asking if there's a "Plan B?"
10:22 - asking if they can get cleared to the gate?  No such luck!  :)
18:47 - "Anybody out there?"  ...asking if anybody went on break because the air was so quiet!  :)
22:40 - aircraft starting to get clearance for visual approach
24:03 - those magical words appear "Contact Kennedy tower on 119.1"

The rest is well, normal, but busy... :)

Just a short news article about the incident:
