There has been a NY airspace-wide TFR (temporary flight restriction) in place all day today.  I assumed it was the current president visiting the UN.

A little clip of another 'Air Force 1' at JFK today, recorded at 3:22PM.
Bahrain One is the equivalent, belonging to the Kingdom of Bahrain.
The 'Head of State' aboard was the King.
(Note the snide comment at the very ending of the audio clip!).

most of the time VIP's (aka obama, the president, or someone of that nature) will be put on a SAFE frequency (and no, i cannot recall what SAFE stand for) that is not published

for security purposes.

at least obama and mccain were everytime they came into my airport

After majoring in Air Traffic Management for four years I have never heard of VIPs being put on a SAFE frequency. From what I understand is that they are put on the regular VHF tower frequency. I also believe that they might be put on the UHF tower frequency but not totally sure. When AF1 flies into an airport there is a secret service agent in the tower and in the TRACON  the facility supervisor plugs into every position that AF1 flies through. Like the tower there might also be a secret service agent but not quite sure. The FAA 7110.65 also doesnt mention anything about VIPS being put on a discrete SAFE frequency when flying into an airport. Where did you hear that they are put on a SAFE frequency?

well I am a controller and I've done it first hand
And it's not everytime.....only when deemed needed. I have seen Obama use discreet callsigns and not be on the SAFE freq.

one more thing.
At least locally at my facility this is how it's done
I can't recall if it's a national thing or not now. Applogies

But I do know that discreet call signs is national.

they have some fancy thing that SAFE stands for...its not necessarily for it to be "safe"...

When they left the UN Assembly everything was pretty much normal: "AF1 Cleared for take off" "AF1 climb and maintain 7000 and contact NY Departure etc..."

I assume they were given the VHF frequency for the controller and not the UHF frequency?

I love how someone who "majored in Air Traffic Management for four years" is getting in arguments with REAL controllers about air traffic control.  Man I love these forums!  Hold on, let me go get some popcorn, this should be fun to watch.

I wasn't trying to create an argument with you. That wasnt my intention at all. I didnt know that you were a controller. I have so much respect for controllers and what they do and I am hoping that within a couple of months I will be in a facility. I don't know everything and wasnt trying to come across like that. Last thing I would want to do on one of these forums is to offend someone. I know that I can learn a lot more and thats what I am trying to do. I just wasnt sure about the whole SAFE frequency and whether or not that was something new. By the way where are you a controller?

Way to go JD.  Did your instructor chew your ass to get you this bitter?

Don't worry, JD's bark is worse than his bite.  Actually, he's very knowledgable for a relative newb.  You will probably learn a lot from him when he's having a better day.

How's that popcorn JD?
