Just Enlisted In the Navy as AC. Any advice?
« on: March 20, 2007, 05:03:26 PM »
Hello Everyone,
Im 23 years old and I recently enlisted in the Navy as an Air Traffic Controller. It is a five-year program. I wanted to have a job that would transfer into civilian life when I get out in five years. AC looked interesting and I called the FAA and asked them if it was a good idea to get my training through the military and the lady at Human Resources told me,"Absolutely". If there are any controllers out there that can give me some advice, it would be appreciated.

Any advice? for sure. My advice:

Whatever you do, do not ask where the rest of the Village People are.

Seriously, ATC is a good job to transfer into out of the military. You won't have to worry about the training facility in OKC, as you're coming in the military route. You should be really set for that. Perhaps ogogogogog lend his invaluable experience here...

Advice: When the time comes, pay attention to the way the FAA is treating their controllers before you decide to leave the Navy.

...unless you get hired at a center.

military is a good place to start, just watch out what HR people will tell you, they dont know much about  ATC and will just give you the line they have told to say.as for what will happen in 5 years only time will tell ,their are many changes going on now its hard to tell what will happen by the time your ready.if you get to pick try to get a shore base, a tower or approach control, i dont think that ship controlling will help much, what they do on ship is so diffrent from shore controlling.good luck and watch out for that cheap pootang.

i think he was looking for real faa controllers to respond, you know people who do the job for real every day, you know people who have gone through the training and know whats really going on in the field.

This community is composed of many non-controllers, many of which that have extensive ATC knowledge (though obviously not as much as a real controller).  If you believe only real controllers should respond, feel free to start your own forums dedicated to serve that mission.  Otherwise, anyone that wishes to post a reply can do so.  Let's please not dig up the hard feelings shared in the other thread I had to lock, keep it offline.

You guys are seriously pathetic... if it's not bitching and complaining on one thread that has to be put to a stop, it's moved to another and another... I hope I don't ever have to fly through your airspaces... real or simulated... it takes a certain level of maturity to be an atc... dave, why can't we just remove both these guys so the rest of us can go on having a normal conversation!

Not that I really need to defend myself, but oh well..  :?

I haven't said anything or did anything causing any provocation in this thread to warrant him coming afer me for anything. In fact, if you look further up in this thread, I mentioned to the OP that he should get hold of the Controller, because according to his previous posts, he did ATC in the military and has the experience and advice the OP was looking for. Then he spouts off with more attitude, and goes after me again.. WTF?  :-o

If I could killfile him, I would. But this is a web forum, and now there is bad blood because of his attitude in this forum. I am not going to limit myself or my visits to this forum because someone thinks they are holier than thou. Should I have to? If you question my maturity, please go back through my posts and dissect them objectively. You should see a fair bit of intelligence and maturity. By contrast, have a look at his. Who is mature in this case, especially in trying to have an intelligent conversation? You've even noted that yourself in one of his threads.

I'm done, as far as OG is concerned. I will reply if I have something contributable to the topic at hand if there is a post by him, but as far as anything else is concerned, I am done. Let him act like the immaturish bully. Let him talk down to everyone here like we don't know what we're saying or doing. Let him try to be the king of the streets while the rest of us have more intelligent and mature conversations.

I'm done. Back to my enjoyment of the KLAS feed.

BL.

EDIT: If anyone wants to discuss this, PM me. I'd rather not have it clutter the forum than spark more unwanted threads/convos.

What country do you live in? Im sure its different all over the world. I know in england you can join as an assistant in the RAF with (i think) no grades at all, and if you do well you will be able to become an ATCO after some time.

If you want to join NATS (national air traffic services) you need 5 GCSE and 2 A levels.

Try googling your countries navy and air force websites, and also the governing body of air traffic control.

You said it, Digger.  Here is some required reading on the subject.

Dear NavyATC,

Congratulations!  ATC is an awesome career choice!  Here are some things to keep in mind.  Though you are “designated” an AC, it may (or may not) be a while before you will see a radar room or tower cab.  For some reason the Navy believes “everyone” must clean heads, scrape paint, dolling out food  and/or pick up cigarette butts …. even though thousands of $$$’s have been spent on their training someone has to do it and it is usually the new guy…as they say rank has it’s privileges.  I was lucky, I was assigned to my first facility without cleaning the barracks or galley duty.  Don’t worry, eventually, you will begin training.  Study hard and never loose your enthusiasm, keep a “put me in coach” attitude but don’t suck up (we can recognize a phony a mile away).

Although the FAA may now be hiring “off the street” right now, they can change the rules at any time…statistics: an average of 65% of new hires (no experience, CTI and VRA) in the FAA do not attain CPC…. Without a doubt experience pays.

At the current time the FAA IS direct hiring VRA’s.  VRA (Veteran Readjustment Act) is a method for the government to hire former military.  But like the “off the street” hiring that can change without notice.

Who knows where we will be as far as staffing when your first enlistment is up.  My guess…CRITICAL.  If even 50% of the current retirement eligible CPC’s stay until mandatory retirement, in 5 years the second flood will come the FAA will have no choice age 56 is cut in stone for most controllers.

Good luck to you!
