NWA B757 Emergency landing at Dayton, OH during an airshow
« on: July 20, 2008, 09:04:26 PM »
Just saw this article on USA Today this evening:

Emergency landing interrupts Ohio air show

A Northwest Airlines B757 had to make an emergency landing at Dayton International Airport (KDAY) earlier today while the airport was hosting an airshow.

KDAY is a feed here at LiveATC so this incident will most likely be in the archives.  Apologies as I don't have time now to locate it in the archives to make an audio clip but if someone has time, this might make for good listening.  Here are the flight details:

Northwest Airlines flight 491 out of Tampa, diverted to Dayton sometime around 1600z today.

http://archive-server.liveatc.net/kday/KDAY-Jul-20-2008-1600Z.mp3

Starts at about 15min into the clip, goes basically to the end. Not much dead air to edit out, but I'm sure someone with the time and know-how could preserve the clip. Good stuff.

The definitive quote from a tower controller:

"Uhhh, well, we're going to Plan B here..."

Thanks for locating it!  I will see if I can get some time to convert the archive into a clip tonight.

Appreciate your help.

I took some time last night to listen to this archive file.  Unfortunately there seemed to be a problem with the tower frequency, as the controller's side was garbled and very unreadable at least based on my laptop speakers.  It is hard to tell from the clip if the problem is a reception issue or a transmission issue.  Pilots seemed to have no trouble responding to the controller's instructions so perhaps it was at the reception end.

Either way, IMO it doesn't seem worthy of making a clip.

Well, the movement of planes around to make room was kind of neat, despite not being able to hear the guy in the tower so well.

I've got it all mp3-ified, just need to trim it down to fit in the size limit...will work on it later.

Perhaps it was my limited speakers that discouraged me, then.  If you already have the clip started, you can significantly reduce the size of the clip in Audacity by simply changing the saved MP3 bitrate to that of the archive file itself, which is 16bps.   This option is in the FILE > EXPORT > MP3 menu choice.  Reducing bitrate to 16kbps will not compromise audio quality at all but yet yield a much smaller file size.

For some reason Audacity defaults to a 128kbps or thereabouts, which increases MP3 file size but does not improve quality (since audio compression is destructive - meaning once the bits are thrown away to compress the audio stream they cannot be recovered).
