KLAX ATIS problem. Need help
« on: October 07, 2008, 08:40:10 PM »
Hey Guys,
I posted this in the feeder forum quite a while ago, but never got any responses. I Hopefully posting this here will get to more people.

I have a problem, that maybe you can shed some light on.

I'll try and explain this completely.

As you know, I feed north and south tower, 133.9 and 120.95 respectively.

A few weeks ago, I was informed that my feed was stuck broadcasting ATIS. I logged on from work, and confirmed this. When i got home, it was still ATIS, but the freq was still on 133.9. Obviously the ATIS broadcast continuously, so it was hogging the scanner.BUT, it was the afternoon, and obviously KLAX was using 133.9 heavily at the time for north ops.Soon as I hit the scan button, it immediately went back to normal scanning of the two frequencies.

I later figured that maybe late at night, say  1am to 5am, they must only use the south freq's and must broadcast ATIS on 133.9 in the mean time.

But, what could cause the freq. to stay on ATIS, on 133.9, during the day, when 133.9 is definitely in use at that time as the North Tower Freq?  This has happened at least  10times now, and I'm stumped.

Rob

ps. ATIS is usually broadcast on 18.95 I believe.

I'll have to check my scanner to make sure, but last I remember, ATIS at KLAX is on 133.8 and 135.65. I doubt you would have fatfingered the frequency on your scanner, but you never know... And you're right; overnight, LAX combines Tower on 120.95, and I believe ground goes to 121.75. Do you have 133.8 in your scanner? and is it in the same trunk? If so, is it locked out of the rotating scan?

Thanks for your response.

I only have it scanning between 120.95 and 133.9.  When it gets stuck on on ATIS overnight, it's definetly on 133.9.

In the mean time, I've been forced to keep it only on soutg tower and south ground.

I don't have an explanation as to why ATIS is carrying over to the day time, but what about this idea:  What happens when power is momentarily removed from the scanner and then re-established?  Does the scanner immediately start scanning stored frequencies again?

If so, perhaps one solution is to attach the scanner to one of those inexpensive timers where you can set a brief power-off/power-on cycle during an early morning period you are certain is back to carrying north tower?

Thanks, I think I will try that.
Makes sense.
