KLAX feed coming to a close on Tuesday, May 13th
« on: May 10, 2008, 02:47:40 PM »
It's with a heavy heart that I inform you I'll have to dismantle the KLAX feed next week.  I'm about to move out of my place in Hermosa Beach to go to medical school in New York, so its time to pack up.

Getting the feed up has been a fun and challenging hobby, and I encourage anyone near an airport to do the same.  If there's anyone else near KLAX that may be able replace my feed, talk to me and I may be able to lend you some equipment.

On that note, we should all thank Peter (KSYR-pjr) since it's his scanner, cable, and earlier on, antenna that I used on the feed.  I'll be contacting you soon to arrange their return, Peter.

I also want to thank Dave, Jason, and everyone else that helped me set up and clean up the feed.  I hope the rumored arrangement with the airport for an on-site feed works out.

I'll obviously be using this site a lot still, but if ever I'm near another airport, I won't hesitate to become a feeder again.

Dude-

Wishing you the best of luck in medical school and immense thanks for the LAX feed.  We are discussing one or two potential feeds at the moment and hopefully will have luck with them as well.

All of the listeners here appreciate your dedication!

Dave

Your feed has been excellent, which is an obvious testimony to your dedication and hard work making it what it was.  Thank you, too, for your generous contribution in your time, cash, and equipment.

Make sure you don't leave the forum here, even if you are now going to be on the right coast.  Oh, and if you are going to be living and studying in Manhattan then let's get together for lunch sometime this summer.  I work in NYC Mon through Thurs every week now 'till November or so.  Perhaps that may even be a way to return the equipment, assuming the new LAX feeder doesn't need it.

Hey,

You had an excellent feed and we definitely thank you for your hard dedication to pleasing many (if not most) of our listeners.  We certainly appreciate everything you've done to make the feed possible, even for just a short while.

Best of luck to you and perhaps we'll meet up sometime if you're in the NY area.  I don't live too far from the city.

Athacker, Just wanted to pass on my thanks for the feed, LAX is my favourite airport, used to be great to hear the QF departures at home on my scanner in Sydney and then hear them arrive in LAX 12 hours later. Made the world just a bit smaller !

Thanks again and good luck with medical school in New York

Well folks, I had to pull the plug.  Don't worry, she felt no pain during the procedure.

This won't be the last you all will hear of KLAX.  Stay tuned.

athaker,
Sorry to hear about the LAX feed. Last October my wife took a trip there, I heard her flight get cleared to land @ LAX as well as the take off from KBUF while i was home in New York, pretty cool.  I never knew you were in Hermosa Beach, I'm going there next month for a wedding. Any good plane spotting areas near LAX??

That depends. There isn't a parking/settee area there to planespot like other airports (*coughhackcoughLasVegascoughcough* ;) ), so you're severely limited. On for the north complex (24s/6s), the best I can suggest is In-n-Out Burger on Sepulveda Blvd. Pretty much any trip out to the southwest (Nevada/Arizona/California) must have a visit to In-n-Out included. 'nuff said about that. Anyway, That particular one is off the threshhold of the 24s.

Further down the vicinity is where the spotters used to go, which is Sandpiper Road, which now is patrolled frequently. You'll be asked to pack up and move if you stay there too long.

Finally, if you have time for a nice dinner, stop by the Proud Bird restaurant. It's just off the 25s threshhold, and is a nice place to.. well.. have dinner! Nice nostalgia there with old planes, aviation history, etc. You should be able to get to it by the C shuttle bus from the airport.

Enjoy!

tyketto pretty much hit the good spots for approaching aircraft.  In-n-out is an awesome spot because you get food and then go across the street to the grass.  They bring in a decent amount of the foreign heavy jets so their wingtips are nearly overhead.

Another spot to get a moderate view of departures is a grassy park off of main street, parallel to imperial highway, south of the departure end of 25L.  I saw the A380 lift off from there

There is a park off of 92nd street in (I think) Westchester, which is right next to runway 24 R or 25 L, I forget exactly which one. There, the planes are landing only 200 feet above your head. I take my scanner there and watch and listen simultaneously. So cool. I hope this helps.

Thank you for the KLAX feed. I used to live in SoCal and listened to KLAX religiously. Listening to you feed was nostalgic. And yes, In-n-Out Burger is a favorite spot!  :-D

Thanks so much for all your hard work with the LAX feed; LAX was my home airport for 30 years and where I first got the plane-spotting bug so I really enjoyed your feed.

Thanks to Pete as well for supplying the gear.

Best of luck with your studies and I hope NY treats you well.
