Scanners
« on: January 06, 2006, 06:36:24 PM »
I'm a teenager in the UK who loves aviation and especially ATC. I was hoping to get a scanner (handheld I think would be best for me) to use as I am close to Edinburgh airport in Scotland.

Just wanted to make sure about certain laws etc. and what would be best for me. (I can't really afford a lot of money but any suggestions for a scanner would be appreciated)

Thanks,

-Mike

I own the Maycom AR-108 and the price is around 125$ CAD. It's small and I can hear very well when I'm near the airport.
I couldn't say about UK laws, but I believe it's legal in Canada, as long as we do not transmit & disturb (I know that in France, you need your PPL - so better see before).

Well I check the ofcom site ( http://www.ofcom.org.uk/radiocomms/ifi/enforcement/ofw156x ) and it says:

"it is illegal to listen to anything other than general reception transmissions unless you are either a licensed user of the frequencies in question or have been specifically authorised to do so by a designated person"

Would ATC be covered as general reception or not?
