KPHL feed expansion
« on: August 27, 2009, 02:13:49 PM »
In a couple of weeks the PHL feeds will be expanded and spread out.  Plans still in a state of flux.  Possible split of Tower into 2 feeds, splitting Final off other Philly Approach feeds.  Anyone interested in Ground and/or Ramp at all?  Those would likely be last in the pecking order.

So PHL experts...

If there were, say, no more than four or five total channels, how would you organize them?

I would love to hear final approach on it's own feed.

Heres my opinion on how the channels should be organized:

I can't really decide whether splitting up the tower feeds would be a good idea or not. It has its pros, especially if you're spotting and want to listen to just arrivals or departures, or if you just have a preference of hearing one over the other. It also has its disadvantages where you can't listen to both at the same time and would have to choose, pretty big inconvenience. It would be amazing if it was possible to actually choose splitting them up or listening to both each time you opened the feed, but I guess thats not possible? In the end, I could go either way, but I would say split them up.

I would say split up departure and approach, although its not that big of a deal since departure is usually kept pretty short and brief. I like the idea of having final approach on its own feed. I would also like a ground feed, if possible.

So basically to sum it up:

Either split up the two tower feeds or don't, tough call
Separate feed for final approach
Separate departure and approach feeds
Add a ground feed

Just my opinion

I like listening to the ground feeds. Not sure how interesting PHL would be; any way we could have a sample before making a decision?

Sorry, no way to really sample.  I will happen to be in Philly in a couple weeks and this is an opportunistic upgrade.  Also going to rebuild the server that the feeds are on, so there will be an hour or two of downtime on or around Sept 8th.

Keep the feedback coming.  I will come up with the best compromise solution, which will undoubtedly be a step up!

Ground control  can be very interesting on bad weather nights.

New PHL feeds now live:
http://www.liveatc.net/search/?icao=kphl

Clearance, Ground/Ramp, Tower, Approach, Departure, Final

Note that there may be occasional brief interference since the setup now has several receivers and a preamp.  There is filtering in line to protect against most types of interference but occasional mixing can cause issues.  It affects some frequencies but not others. The upside is that sensitivity has been improved overall.

Enjoy.

I can't thank the team who put this together enough.  As some of you know, I lived in Philly and worked in both the mainline and express ramp tower for a contract company in 06 and 07.  I love being able to hear more of this complex operation.  Also nice to be able to hear ramp as I will be able to recognize some of the voices of people I worked with!

Thanks!

Matt

Hi Matt!

Thank LiveATC and the phl.org folks who provide the location.  :-)

I am open to suggestions for change - can't promise they will be implemented quickly but certainly open to more input.  Clearance is really quiet - perhaps we could add more company freqs there, if there is interest.

The reason I opted for adding Clearance is that there is a large audience of ESL pilots who learn a lot from listening to clearances being issued.

I'm a bit biased as I worked with the folks, but I'd love to hear all three ramp freqs (maybe separated from ground) and I think the main ops freq for USAirways would be pretty entertaining.  There were usually a few good laughs every day from monitoring ops...I used to monitor it along with our own radio freqs so I'd have a heads up on requests for our services.  It could get pretty ugly at times though, as PHL has a reputation for having issues with ramp services and flight crews weren't afraid to complain, and the ops workers weren't afraid to shoot back with their Philly attitudes.

Again, as I said, may not be too interesting to most, so possibly biased on my part.

Yesterday they were using 123.6 as a "tower sequencer". I don't know if that's SOP, but if so it might be nice to have that added to the ground frequencies.

tower sequencer is usually only open when we are on an east flow operation. you just tell the a/c what number they arein the departure lineup andwho their following. I would'nt think that's very interesting.
