DCA Pattern
« on: April 08, 2012, 05:50:17 PM »
For those in the DC area, just took a walk near DCA (April 8 around 2000Z) and noticed an interesting pattern.  Runway 1 is closed due to an equipment failure (could see the flashing orange lights of construction vehicles at the far end of runway 1), so all aircraft are landing and departing runway 33.  I'm used to seeing the smaller RJ's land and depart on this runway, but it was something new to see the larger Airbus A319's etc. taking off that way too.  At any rate, something new to see (new to me at least) on a nice Sunday afternoon, and it made me pick up my pace a little bit on the way back to listen to the DCA feeds on LiveATC!

A United 73 blew tires landing today.  I would surmise a hard and firm short runway landing may have been a factor.  Though the 20kt headwind wind right down the runway is probably helping today.

The hard landing was due to high winds around the D.C. area the other day.  I was being blown all over the roads (NoVA area) on my motorcycle today...

Unfortunately, the crystal clear DCA tower feed appears to be disconnected  :-(

The tower/approach feed is marginal for tower communications
