LGA Departure Runway 22 ??
« on: August 27, 2008, 12:06:45 PM »
At times I see low flying aircraft departing LGA over the skies of Manhattan. Are they departing Runway 22 over the Grand Central Parkway ? I've flown in and out of LGA for 25 years and never been on a flight departing 22. Anyone ?

No, I have never ever seen a departure off of 22. They are departing 13 if I'm not mistaken.

Or depart 4 and make a left turn. That happens too.

Why no runway 22 departures out of laguardia? What happens when the winds are from 220? Do they do 90 degree crosswind takeoffs off the perpendicular runway? If there are never departures out of 22 even when the winds are head-on from that direction, there must be a really good reason... anyone like to share what it might be?

Taxiing to 22 would require crossing 13/31 at a nasty point.  It is better (easier) to land into the wind than it is to takeoff.  So therefore if the wind is:

North, land 4, takeoff 31
Northwest, land 31, takeoff 4
West, land 31, takeoff 4 (or 31 using single rwy ops, depending on strength of wind)
Northeast, land 4, takeoff 13 (or 31, depending on the wind)
East, land 3, takeoff 13
Southeast, land 22 (or 4, depending on the wind), takeoff 13 (it is very rare to land on 13)
South, land 22, takeoff 13.
Southwest, land 22, takeoff 31.

Keep in mind, in the NYC area, its not only just that airport that decides what runway to use.  All of the NYC runways face the same direction:
JFK:  4/22 L/R, 31/13 L/R
LGA: 4/22, 31/13
EWR: 4/22 L/R, 29/11
TEB: 6/24, 1/19
HPN: 16/34

Some of those must match (ie TEB/EWR, LGA/JFK) due to their close proximities.  So if one airport wants to change direction, then they all must.  Usually this isn't a problem as the winds are generally similiar.  To get a feel for it, look at the departure instructions for LGA 13, HPN 16, JFK 31s, any of EWR, or any of TEB.  They all require some fancy maneuvering to stay clear of other airport's traffic areas.

it's not that rare to use 13 for landings at LGA. I have seen it atleast 4 or five times a month depending upon the conditions.

The River visual is specifically set up for that approach.

No. Radar is required however. Aircraft are told to maintain 2000 for as long as possible.

The minimums are 3200 feet and a 5 mile visibility.

have a look at the plate.

With regards to Runway 22 departures, their is a SID (Standard Instrument Departure)

Aircraft are advised to climb on a heading of 224 to the LGA 2.5 DME then turn left heading 070 and maintain 5000.

The Hudson is a busy place to be flying.  Flew down VFR once and the ETCAS never stopped. "Traffic Traffic."  Nice view though.

They do have provisions for Land AND Dep 22 in the N90 SOP's. But I have just never seen that set up. I'm sure it happens. But they will never depart 22 and land on another runway.

I am lucky enough to have just gotten my hands on an actual copy of the entire N90 SOP along with Maps. So if you guys have detailed questions I can look them up. But I'm sure there are people on here who can just answer them straight up.

I have made a 22 takeoff a couple of times. It has been about two years since the last but I have done it. I have seen some aircraft takeoff from 22 because they need the headwind for the proformance numbers.

As far as landing on 13 goes, you will see it more until the crane comes down for the new tower. The crane raises the landing mins for the ILS 22 and 4. 31 only has a LOC so in low weather 13 is the only option. I have only landed on 13 twice this year.

Back to the original post, which way were they flying?  If they are landing 22 and departing 13 and the weather is relatively nice, you'll get the standard bridge/river clearance, where you visually follow the Hudson river up almost to the HPN area before turning base for 22.

While based at LGA I saw a few NWA Dc9's and AAL MD80's depart 22 due to weight/winds.  Very rare but can happen.  You won't see normal ops off 22 though unless 13/31 gets closed and the tailwind on 4 is more then 10.  If that happens expect to also see a ground delay program too.. lol

Rwy 22 departures are not common how many can claim to have departed from 32 at LGA? I did it often as a student
pilot at LGA back in early 70's. They converted taxiway echo into a runway for STOL aircraft. It was ideal when westerly winds were strong.

Departing 22 is avoided as much as practicable due to noise abatement.
