Hey Guys, I am a newbie and I LOVE liveatc.net btw.

anyways: Is it illegal to listen to a live atc feed from my blackberry while I am on the plane (taxiing, etc.)??

I have the feed on my Blackberry, I just want to know if I am allowed to.

You should have your electronics stowed during taxi, takeoff, and landing.

if you talk to the flight crew they may allow you to listen to your feed above 10,000ft. Also you would be physically able to do it the question would be would they allow it! And you cant make personal call but listing to a feed it's the same as listening to the headphone set that they give you!

Definitely wouldn't recommend it at any time when the crew have asked you to turn off electronics. In reality, it's probably not going to cause a problem during taxi but I would only use it during taxi and have it off for takeoff. Do you want to take the chance that it DOES cause a problem?

As for listening above 10,000 feet I'd say that's not possible. As far as I know (And someone please correct me if I'm wrong) your mobile phone doesn't work in the air and unless the aircraft was Wi-Fi equipped, you'd need a GPRS data connection to get online which wouldn't work. I've never tried turning mine on (stays in Offline mode and only on when electronics are allowed) but I'm told it doesn't work.

If you want to listen to your aircraft taxi out, I'd suggest you listen on the archives when you get to where you're going!

Typical mobile phones would not work from 30,000 ft plus - one you're surrounded by metal and two cell tower antennae point out and down, not upward.

I know United has their comms patched into the inflight intercom system if you carry your own headphones onboard, that is when the captain gets around to flipping the switch to turn it on. Anyone else do that?

Nope. UAL is the only one with Ch. 9.

Best that anyone else could offer is inflight WiFi, and you jump on a feed from here.

I'd appreciate your thoughts on Virgin America - they're supposed to be excellent. Let us know!

I did this from my iPhone departing from YYZ to LHR on AI118 last week. It's was quite amazing. I loaded up the stream on my 3Gs iPhone while we where waiting at the gate, and then continued to listen to the ATC feed to 7,000ft when I lost the 3G network. I have to say, I actually got chills listening to it, it was just so amazing.. I felt quite naughty I guess.. almost like I was doing something so awful. It was really fascinating though. I heard ATC issue a left turn to flight level 36 and then felt the plane start to make a left turn. I then repeated the process on my return flight LHR -> YYZ. I picked up the 3G network just below cloud cover and got the feed just about the time that ATC cleared us for landing.

The whole experience was quite amazing, and I intend to do it on all my flights from now on. Smiley

Yes, it is.  Except for airplanes equipped with WiFi, you may not use any device which transmits or receives a signal at any point during the flight, unless said device has it's transmit/receive function disabled.  Cell phones may be used after landing and during taxi, so that's the only time you could do it.  All other electronic devices must also remain off below 10,000 feet and during taxi.

Me too!  I've been listening with my scanners for the last 30 years with never a peep from anyone.  I started with the old Realistic Jetstream back in the 70s, using a single piece earphone.  Be discrete and enjoy the live performance.  Now I use the Pro-43 and try to get seat A so it rests next to my left leg and the earphone wire goes behind my left arm.  The Pro-43 has been around the world with me several times and I jot down the freqs. used so I may track them in the future.  You have to be alert and hope the pilots read back the next freq. clearly or else the show is kind of over until you arrive where I would know the app. twr. freqs.  Once on a BA 777 form LHR to Dubai I was able to follow the flight from pushback all the way until we were with Amman where I didn't catch the next hand over. Basically you hear the pilots clearly, but once in a while you can pick up the controller for a short time depending on where their transmitting antenna might be.  Pre-911 if a cockpit visit was approved I would see what the freq on the active comm. was and then follow the flight form there!
