Live radar feed
« on: May 17, 2006, 02:00:25 PM »
Good evening everyone,

As a test I am feeding a live picture of the Schiphol TMA.
You will need to dowload a small viewer first to see the feed,
but it should be very to install. Here are some instructions:

Hi,

In about one hour I will stop feeding the radar stream, thanks to everyone
that tried connecting tonight. Hopefully it was well received. I will try to
stream again some other time, probably next weekend.

Would appreciate any feedback, thank you. Regards,

René.

Good evening,

I will be feeding the live radar picture again tomorrow, Saturday May 20th
between 1200z and 1500z. For the moment I will be limiting the feed to 5
connections at the same time, so please try again if you can't connect for
the first time.

You will need the program VNC viewer to connect to the feed, instructions
and download are available here: http://www.dutchmil.nl/liveatc/

Hope this helps,

René.

Thank you for that seems to work well!

Can you offer some details on how you have set this up?

Looks nice indeed.  :-)

At www.atcbox.com they have two kind of these radar streams since a couple of months using VNC with unlimmited connections. One of EHAM (Schiphol) and one covering the Netherlands, parts of the UK, Belgium and Germany. Soon to be added two more streams for specific parts of the Netherlands and Belgium.

Check out these screendumps.

screendump EHAM
screendump the Netherlands

Good afternoon,

How is the actual radar image  captured and created?

The radar picture is created with a little "magic" box called SBS-1.
Here is a link: http://www.javiation.co.uk/sbs-1.html

I will be streaming again tonight, although not continuous. The
EHAM feed will be fixed on approach/departure, as this will give
the best result with the live image.

Hope this helps,

René.

That is a very interesting piece of equipment.

How is the reception of the signals? over a wide area? does it have reception similar to a radio scanner or are the signals more or less difficult to pick up?

Signals are picked up similar as a scanner.

wow... expensive

This is very cool though, if you are an avid aviation enthusiast it would be a really good addition to a scanner  :-D :-D

Are there any cheeper out ther?

Ah yes, the SBS-1... I was looking at this product a while back and it seems that it works quite well for people in Europe.  I'm not sure about the US, but there would be not much traffic shown in Canada because of the lack of MODE-S/ADS-B transponder use.

Here is  a small (...) file showing some inbound traffic to Schiphol
this morning, landing runway 18R. Audio is included, be aware the
file is 30 MB large. The URL is:

Hope this is of interest,
