just out of curiosity for any of you liveatc app users - have any of the streams stopped playing resulting in having to press the play button again? it keeps happening to me every 30 or so mins.
just wondering if it's my connection that's playing up.

First of all, thanks for the app Dave.

I do run into this problem listening to the Boston tower and Boston final approach feeds. It tends to cut out after just a few minutes. Oddly, it does not seem to happen when I'm listening via wifi, only 3G.

Other feeds like JFK Tower seem to work fine regardless.

Thanks.  Are you moving or in the same location when this happens?  When you are on 3G or EDGE, you could be getting handed off to another cell, and I am not sure AT&T doesn't reset network connections sometimes.

We'll do more testing and make sure that the connection maintenance is more robust.

Dave

I've had the problem when I'm at home on 3G in an area with strong coverage as well as in the car. However, I listened to JFK Tower this morning in the car driving on 128 for about 20 miles with no problems, same as at home. On the BOS frequencies, the audio ends after a few minutes but the app still indicates that it's streaming and the timer continues to run.

The iPhone app (or any player on your home computer) doesn't care which feed you are listening to.  The issue is almost always connection issues, either at your end, or potentially at the feed end.  For example, if there is any blip in the feed's uplink connection, the feed disconnects briefly, and all listeners are disconnected, causing everyone to have to reconnect.

We are looking at whether, and under what conditions, automatic reconnection should be enabled in the player.  Because it is not always desirable.

Thanks for the reports.  An upcoming version (1.0.2) handles flaky connections much better, so that may help your current issues once it is released some time in the next 1-2 weeks.

Hope this helps.

Dave,
If you ever have a version for other phones in the future (I'm on Sprint), please post it. Thanks.

Boston Tower also stopped running for me after I tuned in about mid-afternoon while driving.  I think I have found that the drops happen when I am driving than if I am in the same spot, so it may have to due with swithching cells.  I will pay more attention in the future.

I've run into an issue where sometimes no feeds are visible. It will show some of different area's but the channels list is blank. E.g. I can select California and see SAN, LAX and SFO, but if select one of those places there is nothing to select under channels. The 3g in my area can be somewhat unreliable, so it seems to me that at times the app is unable update the database when it loads. The problem would appear to be that it doesn't let the user know it wasn't able to successfully update the database. The app just loads like normal, but w/o any channels to play.

I don't know if that's one of the issues being addressed in the next update, but I thought I'd bring it up.

Yes, definitely one of the issues being addressed.  Should be fixed in 1.0.2, due out soon.

If you relaunch the app when you have good connectivity you should be OK, though, right?  For now, anyway.

It doesn't work to me.

When I select an airport there's nothing inside, just blank.

Oh, and I can only select United States.

I'm using Ipod touch.

I'm using Ipod touch.

The issue is typically that you had no network connection available at
the time you launch the application, or that the network connection
failed during the transfer of the database.

Try:
1) Quitting the app.
2) Verifying that you have a network connection.
3) Relaunching the app and checking the list again.

Note that not all streams are always available, but that will not
prevent you from seeing which airports are potentially available.

If this does not work please reply to this message and let me know what
type of network connection you are on (mainly looking to see if it is a
satellite connection as opposed to DSL or cable).

There is a latency issue that prevents channels from showing as live if you are on a super
high latency connection - we do have a fixed version that we are submitting to Apple.  But
that high a latency should be rare.

If this fails, try deleting the app and reinstalling.  If that does not work, submit a ticket on the site at:  http://www.liveatc.net/contact and I will help you offline.

Thanks,
Dave

Version 1.0.2 will likely fix any problems you are having.  We expect to submit it to Apple today or tomorrow.

Seems to be a little finicky while listening to Boston Tower.  The seconds are counting up, but the audio is silent after initiallly working fine.  Thought it was dead air, but not the case.  I recently updated to OS 3.0, so perhaps upcoming update will address.

All feeds are identical from a listener perspective.  That you had an issue with a particular feed when listening has nothing to do with that particular feed.  It generally is due to a flaky or intermittent network connection on your end.   In some cases the feed may have gone down in the middle of you listening, but with Boston it has had 100% uptime recently.

In any case, v1.0.2 should auto-reconnect when you experience bad cell handoffs or intermittent network connectivity.
