Rainy SHORT Final In Hong Kong (Cockpit 747)
« on: March 11, 2009, 03:10:47 PM »
I thought this was really cool. Watch as the airplane rolls out of final (about the 1:30 mark) and the runway is RIGHT THERE!!  :-o

Can be watched with music (kind of cool), or push the button on the top of the screen. Then you can here dialog and aircraft sounds. There is also a full length version, witch shows entire approach. Put your mouse at the top of the screen to get options.

Just a quick note on this approach:
I spook to a friend of mine who is a type rated Captain on the B747-400 and A330 for Northwest/Delta. He used to fly 747s into this airport(this is the old Hong Kong airlport). He said you would fly towards the "checkerboard", witch you can see on the hillside. Once there, you pick up the offset ILS. You fly that down to a point that is actually off the airfield, make the turn you saw in the video, and the runway is right there. He also said at Northwest, this was a "Captains Only" approach. He said it was a intense approach, even on good weather days! :-o

Just thought I'd share that.

What is the sound heard at 2:01, sort of like an electric motor sound that i hear right as the plane touches down. I believe the same sound can be heard at 2:31.

I believe it's auto spoilers deploying, and then retracting. The noise you hear is the handle moving back and forth.

Did you watch either of the other versions?
The full approach is pretty neat as well.
If you like Evanescence, check out the version with music. The song is "Bring Me To Life". It's a little longer then the version without music...pretty cool too.  8-)

Here is a night approach into Hong Kong Kai Tak on a 747-400. At the 2:20 mark, the strobe path becomes visible at the extreme left side of the screen. It's actually curved leading to the runway!!  :-o

Again, the soundtrack is provided by Evanescence, or you can turn the music off and here the airplane!

This video show the approach form insde the airplane, as well as a series of cameras on the ground. At the 2:15 mark, you hear the sound...look at the exterior shor of the airplane...the spoilers deploy at exactilly the same time as the sound. Hope this answered your q!  :-D Cool video too!!

This is the Kai Tak 13 approach and it is one of my favorite approaches for the 747.  There is another video out there that shows this same approach from the opposite side of the runway.  So, you get a really good idea of just how steep the right turn bank angle really is.  Before I saw this video [yesterday], I had no idea that part 121 operators allowed such short final approaches to be made as SOP.

What I'd like to know is where is the MAP on an ILS approach?  I mean, given the close approximation of the aircraft to the numbers on roll-out, if the decision to fly the missed approach was necessary, where in the world do you place the MAP and at what altitude?  They seem already very close to the deck after rolling out.

Anybody know?

SJ30:
Was this the vid you were referring to?? Its a Malaysia 747-400 performing a STEEP bank before landing on 13.

Here is another one. This is Air France:

Check out the balls of steel on this guy! JAL Super Logistics 747-400 extreme crosswind landing on 13:

As for the other info, I'm not sure...sorry...

Yes - the first video was the one I was referring to.  However, the last video shows the short final much better, I think.  Pretty amazing when you stop to think about the fact that they are doing it in a Boeing 747, not a Cessna 172.  Pretty darn skilled at what they do.

I used to think that you had to have something like a 747, set-up on a very long stabilized approach, before you could land it with passengers - just as a company protocol or something.  But, these videos prove that wrong.  These guys are definitely making short finals with passengers while fighting a strong X-Wnd component at the same time!  Like I said, pretty amazing stuff.  You really do have to have a good feel for an aircraft that big, in order to be able to do that.

And performing those tight turns...at 160 KIAS!!!  Thats final glide speed in the 747! Totally awsome!

You mentioned cross wind landings...did you check out the last video?? WOW!!! He landed that thing 45 degrees to the runway!!  :-o

Yeah, and then the aircraft began power-sliding sideways until the nose straightened out.  That was amazing stuff.  I can't believe that the mains will last very long when the hit like that.  The sideways load on the mains has to be enormous.

I wonder why they don't Slip instead of putting in so much crab.  The Slip would have placed the left side mains down first and then the right.  I guess there was so much X-wnd component, that the Slip would have needed to be so large that the left wing tip might have touched before the left mains!   :-o  A definite problem for sure.
