New member, potential new feed.

Hello. Just found this site recently and I really enjoy listening to all the great feeds out there.

I am curious if there would be any interest if I were to provide Missoula, Montana? It could include Missoula International Airport ground and tower, approach and departure control and Salt Lake Center, possibly Seattle Center. Not incredibly busy all the time, however since I work at the airport and fly myself, I can tell you there are days when ATC chatter keeps going all day long. MSO is also home to one of the biggest US Forest Service Aerial Fire Depot's and the smokejumper center, so during a good fire season, there is a lot to listen to there as well. Since I work there, I could also provide some great pics of the airport and some behind the scenes input.

I could provide the uplink from my home. I live about 7 miles from MSO, good line of sight. I have the capability to mount a roof antenna about 30 feet high. I had one before but took it down when I re-shingled my house. The old antenna was shot so I tossed it. Any reccomendations for a good air band antenna? I was looking at the Scantenna, or just a good ol' discone. As for the scanner, it's Bearcat 350A radio.

I am curious about how the scanner is hooked to the PC. I understand it's just a 1/8 inch cable, but does this require a dedicated PC to provide the feed or can I feed through my laptop while doing other tasks on the same laptop. I do have an old desktop that I could use for the feed only, but sometimes it crashes and I have to restart it. Always on internet connection

Anyway, if anyone is interested in a new feed from out west in the mountains, I would enjoy providing the feed for my airport. Dave, hope to hear from you so we can get it set up.

Hi there stealth71!  We are always looking for new feeds.  If you could provide a little information on your system setup (computer, sound-card, scanner, reception and/or terrain in the area, distance from airport(s), etc, etc) that would really help.  Feel free to post it in these forums or drop me a PM.  8)

The BC350A is a great scanner.  Very basic and user-friendly.  Many feeds are streamed off of the 350.

Hey Jason, thanks for the reply. I guess as far as the older PC, it's an anchient (1996) Compaq 9642 mini-tower, 133 mhz, and whatever the factory installed soundcard is. DSL internet 256 up, 1.5 down. The scanner is the BC 350A linked to a roof mounted antenna about 30 feet high with good line of sight to the airport control tower and FAA repeater site, no hills or other obstructions. In short, I get good to excellent reception from my house which is about 7 miles away from MSO.

If the above PC is too slow or old, my other computer is my Compaq Evo N160 laptop. I'd like to use the other PC because I could dedicate it strictly to providing a feed since I only use it once in a while for basic word processing.

I guess I'm just wondering how to get it set up. Does someone from this site have to get in touch with me to provide software or instructions? I'm definitely anxious to try this. Hope some of this helps, reply if I can provide anymore info.

Chris

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the speedy responce.  You must type fast!  I have to check with Dave on the 133MHz.  *Dave, do you know what the minimum processor speed for running STWin?*

The audio from the scanner to the computer is via a 1/8" audio cable from the "external speaker" jack of the scanner to the "line-in" jack on your sound card.  Streaming is done via a program that is provided by Dave.

**I'll edit this post in the morning and include more information, I'm a bit tired at the moment.  Have a great night!**

Well, if anything, this laptop is over a gig speed, so I could always try this if the 133 is too slow.

Yeah, Cris is a good guy, seems to be a real hands-on director. He's going to be busy for the next few years as the airport authority is either planning or starting construction on the new terminal addition, a replacement control tower, new parallel runway 11/29,etc. It's fun watching all the changes out there every day.
