Location of Center transmitters.
« on: May 01, 2006, 05:39:08 PM »
I've been setting up a feed for my nearest regional airport (KSWO) and still have to settle on a permanent location for the antenna (a homemade J-pole that works great mounted on my roof at home, not so great leaning against the wall inside my office, where I'd prefer the feed to be).  That will probably be resolved in the next week or so.

In the meantime, I've gotten my brother hooked on the idea, but he may be too far away (24 to 28 miles) from his nearest major airports (KOKC and KPWA) to receive the tower or ground comms. His current antenna is a  Radio Shack discone antenna (the big one, not the little one they show in their catalog now) that doesn't seem up to the task.  It's low (no) gain, so I think he'll benefit from the higher gain of my tuned J-pole.  On Wednesday we'll be testing that and a colinear I built.

Assuming that doesn't pan out, it has been suggested that we search for any local "Center" transmitters (I do know the "local" Center freqs at PNC and OKC).  Centers would be ZFW for his location, and ZKC for mine.  So after all that long-winded intro: where are Center transmitters physically located?  Are they necessarily at a local airport or might they be out in the boonies somewhere?  I've asked my friend Google repeatly but he's staying mum on the topic.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Try here:

http://www.milaircomms.com/artcc_frequencies.html

There is some outdated stuff but generally pretty good info.

Also check http://www.radioreference.com - great site.

Thanks for the first link.  I've found RadioReference to be a wonderful resource too.

Since the map from the first link shows dots at airport locations, I'll assume the transmitters are located there.

No, read the tables.  The towns listed in the tables are the Center transmitter locations.

Mmmm.

/me dons a very tattered diplomacy hat

The list provides frequencies, which I have found previously. But unless FireFox is omitting some Microsoft extensions to the site, the only physical locations indicated are the local airports.  Been searching for some lat/longs.

Anyway, I've already tried ZKC out of PNC to no avail (airborne traffic, but no controller) and we'll be trying the OKC freqs for ZFW on Wed.  So, I guess we'll get what we get :)

Thanks for all the help and this most excellent site!

Depends on where you live.  I live about two miles south of KTUL and the only center frequency that I get with any consistency is Tulsa High on 125.82.  I constantly hear Tulsa Approach handing off to 127.8, 128.8 (both KC) and 132.1 (Memphis, I believe) as well as 132.2 (Ft Worth).  But I can not hear any of those for some reason.
