Pilots care about the actual degrees, not the number designation.
Well, it does
serve as a quick sanity check. Say you don't have some fancy FMS with aurals like "Approaching runway two eight"
. Say you didn't have your morning cup of coffee, either.
If two (or more!) intersecting runways' thresholds are near each other, a quick look at your compass or the numbers painted on the runway will help confirm you've lined up for the runway for which you just received takeoff/landing clearance.
