Neighborhood Covenant Control and Antennas

Hey guys,

Curious about something.  Not yet being in the "real world" on my own, I'm a little curious about covenant controlled neighborhoods.  Are they pretty common?  Do they usually restrict antennas?

I'd like to (one day) set up a feed with a fat ol' antenna on the roof for some killer reception, but I'm afraid I'll end up in a place that antennas aren't kosher.  While I trust not as high vertically, is attic-mount still a decent way to go in case I cant get a mast up?

Yes, attic mount can work fine.  A lot depends on your topography and location in relation to what you are trying to receive. If you are on high ground to begin with, that is usually good, for example.  Just make sure you have a big enough attic for the type of antenna you would like to use.

If you value thing like putting antennas up, though, stay out of neighborhoods with CCR's, if you can.

Something to do with witches I think.  Can't possibly be good.  ;)

Seriously, sounds similar to a Homeowner's Association.  They tell you what color you can paint your house, which type of shrubs you can plant, and what type of boats you can't park in your yard (and that would be "any").

 :?:

Not uncommon in cookie-cutter neighborhoods.

The apartment complex I'm at (slightly different situation) doesn't allow any type of antennas mounted outside (along with satellite dishes, etc.).

I am a former Zoning Administrator for the City of Robinson, IL.  First I'll say I'm so very glad that my position is "former" Zoning Administrator, as I hated that job LOL
Covenants are generally created during the establishment of a new subdivision.  They are put in by the subdivions owner(s) and can be changed through legal action by residents of that subdivision.  If not changed, anyone living within that area is required to go by those rules and can be sued by other homeowners in that subdivision for violations.
The City does not enforce covenants.  I frequently got calls in my office regarding someone violating some neighborhood covenant, which I had no control over.  I always referred them to their own attorney for guidance on resolving those conflicts.
Our zoning code has some minimal requirements regarding antenna towers.  The zoning code can only set some guidelines, but cannot interfere with or prevent communications.
