New feed (ZDV)
« on: November 06, 2011, 12:43:11 AM »
Hello all!

Just wanted to let you know that we have a new feed running - Denver Center (ZDV).
This means that the KDEN App/Dep feed will now just be App/Dep.
This should make monitoring A/C in the Denver area a bit easier when it's busy.

For those not familiar with Center monitoring, you will not hear the controller in many cases, unless the channel being monitored is a "Low" channel in the Denver area.

Thanks for listening!
Mike

Also, the Ground Alternate (De-Ice) channel has been removed from the TWR/GND feed as it took up alot of airtime during snowstorms.

S15 Lo has been changed to 118.475 (Thanks Mike!)

Also - today, tomorrow and Wednesday, we'll be using this feed to survey frequency usage in three areas, so you will hear only limited traffic.

Today - South Hi
Tomorrow - East Lo/Hi
Wednesday - North Hi

Datainmotion, any chance you'd post some more specifics about your PCR-100 setup? I'd love to set up a system where I could add/drop/reconfigure freqs on the fly remotely, as my feed is in a remote location. I've had my eye on going with either some PCR-100/1000 units or FunCubeDongles. Are you running a Linux feed or other? Maybe you could start a thread in Feed Setup Pics? Thanks!

You mean 118.475 not 118.975 Mike ????   It's 118.475 .

Thanks for your interest. While it's nothing special, I'd be happy to share the details:

Icom PCR-100 - Good receiver (IMHO) that you can find cheap these days, if you keep your eyes open. I have bought three from the same seller on Craigslist for $90 ea.

Trunk PCR control software - I use Trunk PCR rather than Talk PCR (both free - google them) because Trunk PCR can run multiple clients side-by-side easily. This software allows maximum control over all facets of the receiver, including editing channels without disturbing the scan "flow"..

Antenna - Homebuilt center-fed dipole cut for 127 MHz. I used 3/4" copper tube connected via a 300 ohm - 75ohm balun to the feedline which is RG-6 coax. The antenna is mounted 28' above ground level on my chimney and has a clear view of Denver International Airport, 13 miles away.

Computer - No name PC running XP SP3 utilizing the onboard audio and three USB audio adapters ($1 e-bay specials)

You can also control these from Linux with Hamlib

I control one of the HF feed receivers (an Icom PCR-1500) with Hamlib and some home-grown scripts.  This enables the easy automation of hourly frequency changes.

How hard is it to set something like this up ? I would find a radio that could switch to different configurations every few hours very useful at some locations, perhaps even timed to arrival/departure banks or timed to traffic volume. This would give you good coverage of a certain area without having to scan ALL frequencies at the same time, which makes the radio difficult to listen to (this ZDV radio being an example).

It is generally much easier and more stable to install multiple receivers.  That is why I run up to 10 receivers at many of the super feed locations.  However, it is certainly possible to scan multiple frequencies and change programs every few hours with the PCR series radios, and we may indeed do this in the future, where and if it makes sense.

Thank both for the info! Will keep my eyes out for a good deal on a PCR. Then the next step is building a tiny PC with a bunch of serial ports...

Yes - actually now it will be today and tomorrow. Also S14H Hayden will be in the mix too.
We will resume normal broadcasting on Friday (always wanted to say that  )

FWIW - I raised my feed dipole about 3' today - just enough to get a clear view to the West with the upper element. Seems to make a difference on some of the closer sectors and I'm starting to hear more controllers as well...

I've now seperated this feed into two banks, one for High/Ultra-high and one for Low. I had to lock out VHF Guard due to the PCR-100 picking up interference (not present on other receivers on the same antenna).

The new lineup is as follows:

Bank 1 (H/UH)
S16 H – 120.575
S67 UH – 124.225
S46 UH – 124.775
S37H – 125.675
S09H – 126.325
S03H – 126.725
S61H – 126.875
S08H – 127.025
S39UH – 127.525
S17H – 127.650
S14H – 128.325
S18UH – 132.175
S29H – 132.225
S05H – 132.850
S71H – 133.050 (ZAB)
S34H – 133.175
S38UH – 133.425
S22H – 133.450 (ZKC)
S25H – 133.525
S28H – 134.125
S33H – 134.575
S35H – 135.025
S04H – 135.125
S30UH – 135.400
S65UH – 127.075
VHF Guard – 121.500

Bank 2 (L)
S15L – 118.475
S26L – 119.850
S12L – 125.350
S21L – 125.900
S13L – 126.500
S41L – 128.375
S06L – 128.650
S27L – 133.400
S07L – 133.950
Flight Watch 122.000
