Feeding many streams from one computer
« on: August 04, 2005, 07:10:19 AM »
One member of our community recently got one of these running on Linux.  The stock 1010LT comes with Windows (and Mac) drivers.  So if you have a few scanners lying around and want to feed a bunch of individual feeds, this is probably the way to go, unless you have a bunch of old PCs.  This option may be cheaper in the long run, though, and is better on energy conservation. :-)

It's definitely expensive as sound cards go...but not for professional sound cards:

Of course, you can also use multiple sound cards in one computer, but that can be tedious if you run into sound driver conflicts.  It can be hit or miss.

I have been wanting to set up multiple feeds from one of my computers. Thanks for the info on what you would probably need to get. Dont think, unfortunatly, i will be able to do it that way. Can you use a standard PCI audio hardware? Thanks for your post Dave.

One more thing. Do you have any streaming software that will run on a linux machine, specifically Whitebox E Server or Fedora 4. I have a laptop that i am really wanting to put linux on, but it's the feed computer for dfw east. If you do have it cool but if not ill live.

Install DarkIce from http://darkice.sourceforge.net and then I can send you a config file once you have it installed.  Make sure you get a good handle on the name of your device (/dev/dsp, etc.).  Also, use ALSA tools or aumix to select the Line In recording device for sound input.  Read the aumix man page for more details or Google around for info.

Sure...as long as you can get each PCI sound card to show up as a separate device.  Sometimes the best way to do that is to use different PCI sound cards so you don't get driver conflicts.

If you are doing it on Windows you will need a separate instance (and a separate config file, the .reg file) from me.  Or if you are comfortable editing registry files you can modify the first one I gave you to be config #2...so change the /1 to a /2 in the config.  Edit it with a text file editor.
