  • Nothing Like A 747!
Very nice story...except the part about the pilot dieing , but that's the stuff Hollywood movies are made of!

In that area, I can't think of a better place to land then KRSW. The runway is plenty long and plenty wide! Runway 6 is 12,000 feet long, and 150 ft wide (I think I'm correct on the width, not positive thou...). KFMY (Page Field) is close by, but it's runways are shorter, and it's downtown.

For all of us non-pilots: You always wonder if you were in that situation, would you have the fortitude to take the controls and do what he did. I'd like to think I could. Awesome job Doug!  8-)

Was it a Citation or a King-air?  I've heard news reports of both

A King Air.  Or as the article on CNN said, a Super King Air (not sure which type though but looked liked a 300 or 350 to me).

If you're a King Air pilot, they're all  Super King Air's.

Some of 'em fly VFR above 18,000 ft as well (if you've ever seen that joke before).

It was a king air 350. Coincidentally my dad, grandfather, and I all know the pilot in CT who talked the pilot/paxx through the approach and landing. In fact, he flew a few KingAir trips for my dad back in the day. Small world.

Stories like these are always very comforting!

I saw the CNN report when we got Madrid yesterday. You just have to give credit to;  1. The Passenger/Pilot his primary instructor definitely instilled a sense of priority in him. (Fly the Airplane). 2. All the controllers who worked together for a successful outcome.
Amazing teamwork and coordination!

Hi all,
that was in fact a King Air 200, simply amazing. I'm posting the radio communication file here... notice how relax is the pilot even though he's a bit stressed obviously but anyway he managed it like a pro!

Take care,
