Pilot: Give me your ID and a phone number..
« on: April 26, 2006, 01:24:33 PM »
While I was driving home my scanner picks up this yesterday (Apr 25, 06) and luckily it is in the archive so that I can review this..

This is from the CYYZ Archive, @ 17:30 Apr 25, 2006.  From a conversation between AC460 and the deperature controller

Into the archive file,
0:05 AC460 calls deperature control, everything's normal
1:36 AC460 suggested whether they can help if they stayed low
1:54 AC460 gives another suggestion to the ATC.. ATC says "ENOUGH!"
2:35 ATC gives AC460 instructions for vectors, Pilot asked the ATC to give them a phone number and ID,  ATC says "I don't have time"..  And ignores AC460's request
2:58 AC460 says something which I cannot make out.  And ATC replies "I don't have time either", contiunes to ignore
3:52 ATC gives vectors and enroute frequency, AC460 contiunes to demand for the phone # and ID and ATC contiunes to ignore..

So, for discussion, some points I want to find out:

1)  Can a ATC ignore the phone # and ID request like that by ignoring it 'completly'  (yes he is busy, as I saw it real life spotting yesterday)
2)  Can anyone make sense of what the pilot says at 2:58 into the archive?

And for futher info, if you also listen to the CZYZ archive, same date and time, AC460 requested (and got) the phone number from the next controller, and there was actually a small discussion among the pilots (when I hear it from my scanner when I was driving) but unfourtunately it was blocked by an open mic in the archive.

Yep, that's what the pilot requested.  IMO, the pilot was a knucklehead.

I am editing down the clip and will post it in the Audio Clips forum shortly.

Yah, I can say that when I'm busy, that last thing I'm going to do is sit there giving phone numbers to pissed off aircraft.  Safety comes first, and I'm not going to stop doing other more important things to satisfy a pilots request for a phone number.  It wasn't as if this controller was trying to hide his ID or prevent ACA from calling the center.  Nav Canada ACC numbers are publicly listed, and there is a full record of exactly which employee was working which sector and when, and the controllers knows that, so it's not as if he was trying to avoid the situation by ignoring the pilot.

The biggest thing here though, is you don't want to get into an argument with a pilot on the radio.  Not only is it unprofessional, but it distracts you not only at the time, but it can also keep you distracted for a while after which is a great way to have an incident.  The controller was busy, and it was good that he just went on doing his job without arguing with the pilot further.

Now on the other hand, if he had a couple of minutes free, then he should of, and it's good that the next guy did, but if you're busy, no way in hell I'm taking time to respond to a request like that.

You're welcome, kkjlai.  Since the LiveATC archives only retain the most recent seven days of activity, your thread would have fallen off much quicker had the exchange not been preserved.

It would have been somewhat humorous if, when the pilot requested that the controller pull the tapes, someone responded, "Go to LiveATC.net!"  :)

The ACA pilot is delusional. If he had just a LITTLE bit more of a clue, he would've realized that the controller was saying "ENOUGH" because this guy kept harping on, and the controller had things to do. Granted, the controller could've used more tactful words, but he may have been busy, something this ACA pilot couldn't hope to comprehend.

To keep digging deeper and deeper, wasting more radio time like that shows incredibly poor judgement.  This guy must have some ego.

His solution? Spend a few minutes of the NEXT controller's time.  Does he REALLY feel that he needed the phone number of the ID right then and there? Does he REALLY think that in the event of an incident, there isn't a log of who was working which position at any given time?

This shows a real misunderstanding of how the system works and is disappointing from someone who's flying a jet with passengers aboard.

Why was he requesting the ID and # from the controller? Was he unsatisfied from his actions or?

Most likely, yes.  With a controllers ID (or initials, for that matter) is like getting somebody's name on the phone.  The phone number couuld have been like a "customer service" hotline, but for ATC.
