Pole Question
« on: March 12, 2009, 05:01:02 PM »
I'm thinking about starting up a feed out of Memphis, TN, and had a couple questions.

First of all, I'm about 14 road miles from KMEM, and according to my GPS, 10-11 miles away by air.

I was reading in the FAQ forum, and saw some different options on poles and what not.

I saw this one:
http://www.grove-ent.com/BEAMII.html

Do you guys think that one would work sufficiently?

I was planning either mounting it on top of my roof, or putting a 20-30 foot pole in my back yard, then mounting the pole on that. There aren't really any tall buildings or anything in between myself and the airport...other than maybe the occasional tree.

Secondly, when you guys setup your scanners, do you have them setup to scan a range to pick up the various controlling sectors? Or would it be best to get a couple scanners, and set one to tower..one to approach / depature, one to center..etc etc?

Just looking for some ideas in regards to what the best setup might be.

I have several spare computers that I can easily load windows or linux onto and install multiple sound cards if needed.

If this is in the wrong forum, sorry.

I'd avoid this since that antenna is really a TV antenna and operates at 75 ohms.   You'll get great FM music reception though :-o

I strongly suggest the DPD productions Antenna   http://www.dpdproductions.com/page_vhf_air.html

Get the Vertical antenna  (about 5 ft tall and not the shorty.)    I've got about 6 of these up and running.  They are cut for the avaition band and do a great job to reject Fm radio stations.

Its light enough to clamp it to a vent pipe on your roof ( stainless hose clamps from Home Depot)   Avoid mounting in  trees since you now would become a great  lightning rod   :-o

I recomend  J-Pole. I have had great db gain with J-Poles out of any other antenna I have had. If your not building you own i recomend buying one from here http://jpole-antenna.com/products.php. He is very reasonable priced and seems to do this more as a hobby than anything so you know the quality will be good.

Hmm ok...glad I asked that question then lol.

So as far as mounting, what do you guys recommend?

Would mounting on top of my house work ok? I'm thinking that it it's highest point, my house is about 20-25 feet up. Do I need to worry about running a wire from the pole to the ground to ground it?
