PSP feed
« on: July 18, 2007, 01:25:53 PM »

Looks like the PSP feed is down. I know the reason why, but wanted to give those here a heads up.

SoCal TRACON is pulling PSP airspace, including the TRSA, into its airspace. Those working PSP Approach/Departure have moved to the main SCT facility in Miramar, and are operating out of there. Until they get things finalized, they are leaving the equipment they have at the PSP TRACON at that building for at least 6 months. also, this is in case of emergency and SCT has to be evacuated, etc.

What this means (and I'm not familiar with the local area around Palm Springs, and my assumption only) is that if there wasn't a repeater in the area of the feed, the scanner in that area probably lost line of sight with the facility.

I know that the feed also included PSP Tower, Ground, the CTAFs for Bermuda Dunes, and a couple of Center frequencies, so what are the odds of getting hold of the person running the feed to take the approach and departure frequencies off the feed?

BL.

I saw that news on AOPA and NBAA earlier in the week, what a shame.

I regard the PSP feed as one of the best on the whole site.  For whatever reason, I find the audio to be of the highest quality from that location and will really miss the approach frequencies if they cease transmitting through the current transmitters.  Depending on how far away the SoCal x-mitters are and the terrain in the area, wouldn't they still leave the PSP antennas and transmit on those?

I believe the transmiters would still be at PSP.  An example of this is the Potomac TRACON.  The transmiters are still at BWI, IAD, DCA, and RIC.  I do not know the proximity of SCT to PSP, but I doubt it is close enough for radios to be useful if transmited from San Diego to PSP.  The line of sight issue comes into play here.

I will be working  that airspace.  The tx/RX site must stay where it is, so you will always hear Socal on 126.7 as you do today. Thanks to all that granite, we must keep the radar and radios where they are or we would never hear our traffic.
