quick question about airplane viewing areas
« on: June 14, 2010, 04:17:40 PM »
When I go down to LAX I go to a spot on 92nd street where the planes come into land. they are about 200' overhead before they land at RW 24R. I was wondering if there is a similar place at JFK? I would appreciate it for any details on this.

Not really.. closes that you're going to see (just using Google Maps on this) is on Broad Street and Bayview Ave off the 878, or Idlewild Park. The former is about 1/2 a mile off the approach end of 31R, parallel to the 22s, while the latter is tucked next to the approach end of 22L. Anything else would be hard to get to, let alone dealing with airport security.

Here is one of my favorite viewing areas. It's at KFLL.
They even put a loudspeaker on a pole that allows you to hear the local controller frequency.

Best way I find out is by looking at Google Earth!  :-D

My grandmothers house is a good place for viewing landings of 31L & 31R. They go right over her house. However, her house is about 12 miles away (as the crow flies) from the field. So I have to be outside and facing the water to get the best reception.

Anyone know of any spots at or around KBOS?  I miss the old observation deck up in the tower.

Try here: http://nycaviation.com/spotting-guides/bos/

Or the parking garage, just don't get caught.

I would also add that on the weekends, the very end of the Black Falcon cruise terminal is a great location. Just use it on the weekends as many of the parking spots are for weekday business.

Actually if you ever get to Long Beach, Long Island it's a great place to see planes going for JFK.  They fly right over, sometimes quite low. Great watching site! Also a very nice beach!

We like going to Jones Beach. The only problem is that the audio quality from my scanner is not optimal when I'm on the boardwalk.  :x

Said it once, and I'll keep saying it until they close the airport (which they won't!).

KLAS.

http://www.birdandhike.com/Aircraft/Spotting/McCa/_McCarran.htm

and ATC gets piped through to your radio. When there, tune to 101.1FM.

KVGT.

http://www.birdandhike.com/Aircraft/Spotting/NoLV/_NLV.htm

Like KLAS, ATC gets piped through to your radio as well. same frequency.

Both are great for the 4th of July and New Years fireworks shows, especially when planes are flying in and out. I plan to be at Sunset around 9pm and not leaving until it's done.
