Russian bomber buzzes U.S. aircraft carrier

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- American fighter jets intercepted two Russian bombers, one of which buzzed a U.S. aircraft carrier in the western Pacific over the weekend, U.S. military officials told CNN Monday.

A Tupolev-95 flies over the Izu Islands, just south of Tokyo, Saturday.

One of them twice flew about 2,000 feet over the deck of the USS Nimitz Saturday while another flew about 50 miles away, officials said. Two others were at least 100 miles away, the military reported.

U.S. Defense officials said four F/A-18A fighter jets from the Nimitz were in the air.

Four turboprop Tupolev-95 Bear bombers took off from Ukrainka air base, in Russia's Far East, in the middle of the night, Japanese officials told The Associated Press, adding that one of the jets violated Japanese airspace.

Russian bombers have been making flights over the western Pacific for several months. In September, two U.S. F-15 fighters scrambled to intercept a plane that came within 50 miles of the coastline.

There have been eight incidents off Alaska since July. Among the latest, on September 5, six F-15s from Elmendorf Air Force Base, adjacent to Anchorage, Alaska, intercepted six Russian bombers about 50 miles from the northwest coast of Alaska.

Two similar incidents occurred in August, one near Cape Lisburne, Alaska, and the other near Cold Bay, Alaska, west of the Aleutian Islands

2000 feet?!  In this day and age wouldn't you think politics would go out the window and they'd have blown the bomber to hell 30 miles out?

I was in the Navy, and onboard an aircraft carrier, and I'm amazed that they not only could get that close, but they probably did it during a "ready deck" which is when the flight deck is having operations, which is also usually constant.
They should have gotten a proverbial "shot across the bow".
Way out of line, and they are provoking alot .

I think someone high in the Soviet power structure is very concerned with the recent successes that the US has had in the anti-ballistic missile
arena.  I think this certain someone is trying to remind everyone of what the Soviet Union was like during the bad days of the cold war.  30 years ago there were only a couple of ABM missile systems and they were  landbound.  Now the US Navy's AEGIS system has been improving steadily, and that makes every Navy ship equipped with it a potential ABM platform.

I actually predict there will be an increase in these "incidents".  The troops on both sides are professionals, so there won't be any gunfire.  I commend the Navy for their reaction during the Nimitz overfly.

And all of this is happening all of a sudden. The Russians are rattling their swords, and just like you said Putin is upto no good. I wonder if they think we've exhausted our military resolve due to the sustained presence in Iraq and Iran.
I'm sure there are alot of people on this site that are either in or have been in the military, and know that Russia definately broke the protective circle of that carrier.
I can only imagine how our pilots felt when they went in with a "hotstick", just one press of the trigger and we would have been commited.
I also give the military a salute for being so disciplined.

Penguin44,
I don't know how the ROE have changed but I know when I was on a carrier, we had a screen on the water that had 2 destroyers and 4 cruisers that circled the ship. The air cover I don't know, but if you got inside that carrier screen, you were usually warned of your encroachment or fired upon. Because no matter what way you put it, that was a threat, and these guys did it twice.
I do know that in my era 55-60, they would have been splashed by the first time, they would not have been let off so easily, as it looks like they are.
I know that no one is wanting another involvement, nor do I, but I believe that Putin is testing our resolve, and that is dangerous.
I hope I answered your question, but I'm sure the ROE have changed obviously.
