Scanner problem - sound only on left channel
« on: February 09, 2006, 03:14:12 PM »
Hello everybody,

I'm new to this forum so it's my first message.

I'm getting everything set up for a new feed on this website from Porto Alegre - Brazil, but today I've encountered a problem related to the audio connection between the scanner and the computer.

I use a RadioShack Pro-97 scanner and I have a RadioShack 20-176  external antenna placed on my building's rooftop (150ft. high). The scanner is connected to the computer via a normal 3.5mm stereo cable.

Until yesterday when I connected the external antenna to the scanner and the scanner to the PC, I would get that annoying "hum" on the transmission. In order to solve that I bought that wire wich you connect on the scanner's BNC connector and on the computer's metallic case in order to ground the system, like some people had done on their scanner's setups. I use the scanner with an AC-DC adaptor.

Good news, with that grounding the "hum" disappeared, but as soon as I connect the grounding to the scanner's BNC connector, the audio feed plays only on the left channel of my computer's speakers. If I disengage the grounding, it plays on both channels but I get that annoying "hum", so it's not a scanner's headphone jack problem.

Does everybody know if this is normal? Anyone experienced something like this on their scanners? I mean, without the grounding the ATC plays on both channels, but when I ground the antenna, I get the ATC sound only on the left channel. The right channel stays mute.

I would REALLY appreciate any hint on this, 'cause I can't wait to provide one more feed to LiveATC.net !   :)

Thanks everyone that read the message.

Regards.
