Setting up a possible KBIX (Keesler AFB) feed
« on: April 02, 2011, 03:18:18 AM »
I'll be moving to Biloxi in June and was looking at possibly setting up a feed for KBIX as I'll be living little less than a mile from the airbase.  I have heard that for most military comms that I will need a high-end scanner that supports up to 200 - 400mhz and am needing some recommendations on how to put together this kind of setup.

I haven't seen any feeds listed for any military bases yet.  I have noticed a lot activity in and out of the base and figured this may make for an interesting feed.  I would especially love to record and archive the hurricane hunters during their ops as they are based out of KBIX.

Another thing... is there any legal or security issues with a feed like this?  Is this sort of stream generally frowned upon?

If so I may look at doing a KGPT feed with a more standard setup, but it may be too weak at that distance.

Suggestions / comments are greatly appreciated.   :-D

Same question here.  I live about 3 miles from KGRK..... (dual military/civilian use).  Don't know the legalities.

If you browse the LIVEATC feeds you will find quite a few military feeds.  There is nothing illegal (IMHO) with feeding those freqs.  You will mostly hear the same kind of exchanges that you normally hear on 118-136MHz except the military uses faster and shorter transmissions with lots of "Buzz" words that only the military uses.
I believe the Hurricane Hunters use HF and satellite phones when flying around hurricanes, if at all.  They don't have time to talk while investigating inside a hurricane. When taking off and landing they use the UHF freqs to talk to approach and tower. :-D

I found this hurricane hunter info with a google search:

With the exception of fighters, most military aircraft are equipted with, and use, VHF frequencies.  I know they are equipted with UHF also.   I have seen fighters equipted with VHF as well, but they seem to prefer UHF.
