To feed or not to feed....
« on: September 08, 2005, 11:26:04 PM »
Ok, I have been a long time listener, and now am thinking of setting up my own feed.

I have 9 computers (all over 1Ghz) laying around the apartment, a 3000 down, 300 up cable connection, and am located 9-10 miles from the airport right on the rw36 approach for KFAR, Fargo Hector International Airport in Fargo ND, Home of the 119th North Dakota Air National Guard Fighter Wing.

The questions I have are...
1) Would it be worth my time and effort to set up a feed of this airport (class Bravo airport)
2) I don't have a scanner yet, so I would need suggestions on something to start with in the $100-$300 range.  This is just a hobby, not a serious focus so I can't justify $700 (still can't even if I don't have a wife yet).
3) Any tips from the vets on setting up, maintaining, and working a feed?
4) How would a guys go about captureing/recording a stream? I am not a computer dolt (PC Technician actually...hence the many computers), but I have not been studying into the audio stream technology yet.  Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

go to radio shack, but the PRO-2051 (20-426), it's on sale for $149.97 + tax right now and it's a great scanner, then buy a cable to connect it to the computer (42-2387 stereo or 42-2420 mono) for $3.29 + tax, buy the RG-8 or RG-58 cable length you need (20ft RG-58 278-967 $10.49 + tax), buy a BNC to SO239 adapter (278-0120 $5.29 + tax) and last but not least an antenna ... I currently use this antenna :

It is not big (I live in an apt) but it receives GREAT !

total of just under $200 for everything (+ tax on the radio shack stuff)
it's fun ... you should do it :D

Fargo would be a great addition!

You don't need much bandwidth to provide the feed (16kb/s) and I set you up with the right software (free).
