If you're a British citizen and would like the law lifted on monitoring ATC communications, then click the link above or below and sign the petition!

The law states that although it is not illegal to sell, buy or own a scanning or other receiver in the UK, it must only be used to listen to transmissions meant for GENERAL RECEPTION.

OFCOM states :- "It is an offense to listen to any other radio services unless you are authorised by a designated person to do so.

This means that it is illegal to listen to anything other than general reception transmissions unless you are either a licensed user of the frequencies in question or have been specifically authorised to do so by a designated person".

The undersigned believe that a change to permit monitoring of aviation transmissions would have no prejudice to privacy and would facilitate legally, the enjoyment of events such as airshows, aircraft spotting and promote in a positive manner the role and duties of pilots and air traffic controllers...

I doubt that the law will be lifted, but it's better than doing nothing. Smiley

Well, here's a political question...

Would you need to be a UK resident to do this? would this not fall under being a resident under the crown?

I think you do need to be a UK resident because sovereign states have different laws and governments.

I've signed and I think you only need 100 signatures for the prime minister himself to reply. Or send an automated message - hopefully we'll find out Smiley

There are rumours here that the Government are planing to scrap the Red Arrows in a cost-cutting exercise.  I was going to ask you all, as aviation fans, to sign the petition to save them but it said you had to be a Uk citizen to sign.  I fail to see why, as they are admired around the world at their many displays and as such act as fine ambassadors for our country (unlike most politicians!).  Surely aviation fans are affected by our country's laws which would forbid them from listening in if they were to visit us to 'plane spot' etc?  Why shouldn't they have a say.  People all round the world sign petitions against bullfighting in Spain or whaling by the Japanese.

Signed as well.
Over half way there Smiley

So surely under these guidlines, with written permission from the SATCO transmissions could be broadcast?

Thanks for putting this petition forth...and good luck!  There is a LOT of pent-up demand for U.K. feeds.

Wow, deadline to sign the petition is 15 February 2008.   Looks like changes move as slowly there as they do within other countries' governments.
