Wanting to provide a feed but far from an airport
« on: August 14, 2007, 06:22:10 PM »
Subject is pretty self-explanatory.

I'm interested in getting a scanner, I love listening to ATC communications and would like to bring it when I go spotting too. I live in Westport, CT though...and am not really that close to an airport. I'm wondering what you all think would be a good setup for someone in my situation?

Thanks, any advice is appreciated!

Hey Nick,

As you already know, we live around the same area.  Try 126.4 (NOBBI), 120.55 (HPN DEP), 124.075, 133.1 (SEALL), 120.8 (HAARP) to see what you can pick up off the N90 transmitters.  My reception is pretty spotty here, but may be better where you are due to low/non-existent terrain.

Let me know how that works.

Well I don't currently own one, they're a little steep price wise so I want to make sure if I do buy one, I buy one that has a pretty nice range.

One thing I don't want to run into is getting aircraft and not the controller or vice versa, that really bugs me and I would be pretty annoyed if that was the case for me. So would you guys suggest like an antenna for that?

I was thinking Arinc might be cool to get too, I know the New York frequency and it's a VHF one like the rest.

If you don't want to purchase yet, I can come over sometime in the next week or so with one of mine.  As I'm sure you're already aware, VHF is line of sight and therefore, radio reception is going to be the factor between ability to hear both sides of the transmissions or not.
