What in the world were they doing?
« on: May 13, 2010, 12:08:17 PM »
My office is right across the street from the north end of runway 15 at KBUR.  I was sitting here, and heard what sounded like a gunshot, followed by a screeching sound.  I went to the window, and heard it again.  I noticed a couple of people near the end of the runway standing next to a truck with the airport logo, so I went out front to get a better look, and saw that it looked like one of them had some kind of gun that he pointed in the air and shot for a 3rd time.

Does anyone have an idea of what they were doing?  Is this some way of checking winds, or the radar or something?

Very strange...

Birds?  I know of some places where they have this contraption at the end of the runway.  At the push of a button it basically shoots a loud fire cracker to scare away any birds.  But this is a small community airport.  Don't really see much of a bird habitat in Burbank!

May not just be birds could also be other wildlife.  Instead of wasting time chasing coyotes and dogs and teh lot sometimes they use same techniques for birds.  We used to do alot in yuma arizona back in the day.

It can be the BCU (bird controll Unit) allright they use flareguns and fireworks and also the sound of wounded (dying) seagulls (where I am) ....

If there was seriously something going on, http://www.kbur.com/ would know it....

Interesting.  That might be it.

It's true that this isn't really much of a wildlife area, but there are a bunch of commissaries here where they service catering trucks, and that does attract a lot of birds.  And we did have a birdstrike a few weeks ago on approach to runway 8.

Sounds like wildlife abatement.

When I worked at KSLC, I'd often see OPS getting out their shotguns and scaring the falcons and migratory birds away from the grassy areas next to the AOA.
