What is going on with CMI ATC feed?????
« on: November 23, 2008, 12:42:59 PM »
I know ive posted this before but what is this thing actually taking audio from?  It sounds like some guys apartment and from listening earlier this guy does go to the school that is next to the airport.  I figured someone noticed the problem cause CMI audio feed went down for a couple weeks but its now back up and still has the same issue.  How is this recording from some random persons apt??  Can someone explain?

How does this happen?  Somehow the software that converts and transmits the scanner's audio instead pulls the input from the computer's mic, rather than the input providing the scanner audio.

It actually happens occasionally with other feeds here, too.  Hopefully the volunteer providing this particular feed sees your note and takes action before someone in that apartment says or does something they don't want transmitted to the millions listening to the feed.  (That latter part was sarcasm, in the event it wasn't obvious.)

So the way live ATC works is that someone at their apt has software that does all this stuff and the input from the audio is coming from the wrong place?  I figured the audio was coming directly from the control tower so I didnt think someones apt was used at all so thats what confused me the most.

Nope.  All feeds are provided by volunteers located at their homes or, in a few cases, from FBOs (general aviation terminals) on the airport grounds.  None of the feeds of which I am aware come directly from any ATC facility.

Take a read through the FAQs that are listed here.  These should answer a lot of questions.
