Describing a pic for English Proficiency Test for ATC
« on: March 13, 2014, 11:01:48 PM »
Hi, I'm a Korean ATC student trying to pass English proficiency test with a good score

i couldn't find any good website or institutions in korea to help me achieve that level

i was wondering if you guys have any suggstions

and btw i didn't know if anyone could help me describe this picture, a professional ATC level english description would very much be appreciated. Thanks guys!

Look at the picture provided. Describe what you see. What do you think happened to the aircraft? How do you think it happened?

I see a South African A340 with its nose gear off the runway/taxiway.  The nose gear does not appear to be collapsed, rather it seems to be sunken into the ground since you can see daylight between the fuselage and the ground.

The aircraft is not in takeoff configuration because all the flaps are retracted.  This suggests that the aircraft may have just landed and the flight crew had already "cleaned up" the airplane before this incident happened.

It does not appear to be an emergency landing because none of the doors are open and no evacuation was started.

Some questions that comes to mind: when did this happen?  During the daytime or at night?  How long has the plane been sitting there?  If this occurred at night, perhaps the pilots misjudged where they were on the runway/taxiway when they attempted to make a turn and ended up in the grass.

The clear sky suggests that weather was not a factor.

The photo appears to have been taken from a point on the runway.  The two white strips in the pavement to the right would suggest that.

Another possibility is that maybe the aircraft was attempting to make a 180 on the runway to back-taxi on the runway after landing.  Maybe the pilots misjudged that maneuver.  But I think this possibility less likely.

It's possible there are still passengers on board.  The doors are all still closed and there are no portable stairways in the picture.  Of course the plane could be empty too.

There seem to be a number of possible reasons how and why this happened.  It's not easy to tell from this picture.  If I think of more things I'll add them.  I hope this helps.

Ron

Thank you so very much for the detailed response. Us Korean ATC students have very poor educational environment and not many good sources to learn from. It's very difficult to be proficient in aviation english since our first language is far from being similar to English. It is much more difficult for us to make that transition from Korean to English. I hope I don't get denounced for what I'm doing here on Live ATC.net because I was also trying to get help from the other forum called PRuNe and the guys were publicly criticizing me for asking such questions.

A very generous PruNe User
"Perhaps I'm being too wary here, but this doesn't sound like an innocent question. A journo looking for another angle to write about the MH flight perhaps? Especially so when read in conjunction with his other post."

ICAO is trying to make cooperative aircraft operation throughout the entire aviation world. I think this type of attitude needs to change. I think the americans and the europeans need to be much more generous with their knowledge in aviation. So, thank you for being generous with your knowledge, sir.

Send Joe Petroni out there. He'll get it out. (Petroni is a character's name in the US made movie series "Airport")
There is a scene in "Airport (1970)" where Petroni "Drives" a stuck 707 out of the mud. Your photo of stuck aircraft reminded me of that.
Welcome to the forum and Good Luck on your English proficiency test kaycekwon!  :-)

I thought it was snow...the plows were getting ready to "plow" the 707 out of the way.  At least that's how I remember it.  I could be wrong...I haven't seen that movie in a while  :-D

I thought I saw Joe standing under the fuselage in that pic  :-)  I thought he retired  :-)

I second the Welcome kaycekwon!!

RonR, you are correct, it was snow the 707 was stuck in, and the damaged 707 was inbound...the plows were moving in to clear the runway...after the 707 powers out of the snow, one of my favorite line in the movie is said in an exchange between the young pilot and Petroni with Bakersfield looking on...

"The instruction book said that was impossible..."

"That's one nice thing about the 707. It can do everything BUT read!!" (Petroni retorts and tosses chewed cigar over his shoulder...)

Searching AvHerald, I think this link notes what happened to the SA A340.  It is brief.
