ORD Penalty Box
« on: July 02, 2009, 11:44:57 AM »
Looking at a diagram of Chicago O'Hare and to the west of the terminal ramp off of A4 and A5 taxiways is a pad labeled "Penalty Box."  What to you have to do for ATC to send you to the penalty box?   :-D

I've heard of these before.  I believe they are used for aircraft that do not respond quickly enough to instructions given to them.  Since the airport is so congested, you have to be able to acknowledge and complete the instruction given to you or wait until you can be sequenced in later on.  Kind of works like the penalty box in hockey.  I know they use them for aircraft that make wrong turns and start going the wrong way.

Ha ha.

It's another holding box for aircraft waiting for their gate to open up.

Its for sitting out your 5 minute game misconduct penalty...

I've sat in it (as a passenger) quite a few times on United flights.  Ussually when we got in early and the gate wasn't open yet.

Yes nothing worse then the captain coming on with "I have good news, and bad news"  "Good news, we are 20 minutes early, bad news, our gate won't be open for another 20 minutes".  This happens on those rare occasions that there are no delays into ORD, United, along with all other airlines build in 20-30 minutes in delays, especially during peak times into their schedules so they can show an on time arrival.  When all goes well, they land early but have no where to go.

I flew into LAX from RJAA one time. Before we touched down our pilot was proud to inform us we would be about 30 minutes early. After we touched down our pilot informed us that there was a plane at our gate running late, and we would have to wait until they pushed back. After about 30 minutes we finally got to our gate, and were informed that immigration was not yet open and we would have to wait on the plane until they did. About 30 minutes later we were finally allowed to get off the plane. Yay for being early. :|

Five years ago I was flying into ORD with a connection to DFW. We got in a bit early. The pilot told us we where sent to the "penalty box" until a spot opened up for us. I thought it was funny and he liked hockey  :-P

Was not all that bad, we got to walk off the plane on to the ramp area to the terminal.
