Wind shear reports- PILOTS ANSWER
« on: February 19, 2011, 02:53:57 PM »
When pilots provide wind shear reports to the tower after landing, where do they obtain the information given?  Is it simply a combination of using your airspeed and altimeter or is there a computerized report created on-board?

Basically yes. Airspeed, vertical speed, pitch, glideslope displacement, and thrust lever position are also used to identify windshear.

There's also GPWS/EGPWS windshear warning systems .....

There's no "report" created after the fact that is available to the flight crew

There's no "report" created after the fact that is available to the flight crew (not on any of the planes I've flown, B727/B737NG/B757/B767/A320).

I think the OP is asking about PIREPs given after windshear encounters.  A gain or loss of airspeed on final is reported  using indications observed by the crew on the airspeed indicator and altimeter (ie. gain of 15 knots at 1000 feet, etc).

Also important to note, most onboard windshear warning systems will sample the temperature profile as you descend and will provide windshear cautions or warnings as appropriate.

OP - "is there a computerized report created on-board?"

The OP asked both questions.  Thanks for pointing it out.
