Facility rating
« on: April 03, 2010, 02:30:10 PM »
Can someone be so kind and explain what "facility rating" is. When I look at ATC jobs, it says one needs a, CTO 6 months exp. and a facility rating. (Contract Tower)

What is this facility rating and how does one obtain one? Can someone please break it down for me, I am not an ATC just a potential student. I am looking to get qualified for Contract Tower work.

It means that you would need prior experience for the job.  The only way to obtain a facility rating is to actually work at another control tower and have been checked out on all the positions in that facility (thus, being rated to work any position at the facility).  Most contract towers usually want prior experience, I haven't seen one that requires no experience.  Typically they also like at least 6 months of experience too (meaning that you got the facility rating and then worked for at least 6 months afterward), as the one you mentioned requires.

The various categories of ATC hiring are:

CTO:  previous controlling experience
CTI:  college graduate from approved ATC school
REINST:  Former FAA controller to be reinstated
VMA:  former military controller
PUBNAT:  no experience/off the street
OTS:  no experience/off the street

I think that's all of them, unless you see one I missed?
