New NY Tracon freq?
« on: June 15, 2014, 08:34:48 PM »
Wondering if anyone had any info -- in the Newark area for MMU/TEB/CDW, etc, I have been used to 127.6, but lately I have been getting 120.15 which seems to be new.  Any info on this?  I am also sometimes getting 119.2 for flight following, which is also new since it is usually an IFR departure frequency.

To the best of my knowledge, 120.15 has been in use for some time and isn't all that new. It is an approach frequency primarily for flights into KEWR from the north. 127.6 is used for approaches to KJFK from the west but I think it's only used when it gets really busy. Other times I hear 128.125 used as the initial approach freq for KJFK and then later at night it's 125.7. 119.2 is KEWR's departure frequency but I'm sure is also used for flight following through the airspace. I hope this helps.

120.15 and 119.20 have both been in use for years. I suspect what you are hearing is a different sector configuration than what you are used to ? I'm guessing either the sectors are combined (light traffic) or the airspace boundaries change depending on what runway's EWR and TEB are using ?

A current sector map for the TRACON would be helpfull (I can't find one on the web). The N90 wikipedia page has a good diagram of the radar positions.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_TRACON

Next time note what runways EWR and TEB are using and how busy it is and you might be able to figure out what frequency they will typically use around the MMU/CDW area for VFR traffic ?

As far as I know, 127.6 is MUGZY and 120.15 is North Arrival, MUGZY is a satellite sector. MUGZY's area of jurisdiction is roughly 4000 ft and below, in the CDW/MMU/TEB area.
North Arrival's area of jurisdiction is North of EWR, above MUGZY from approx. 5000 to 7000. They take the SHAFF and FLOSI arrival flows.

Thanks for all the info.  Last time I got 120.15, I was returning from the West right around the Del. Water Gap.  Usually get 127.6 there, even put it in standby anticipating it.  It was about 3 weeks ago, EWR had the one runway closed for construction, using 11/29, maybe that had something do to with the configuration change...

Speaking of new NY Tracon frequencies. I noticed this morning that they were using 124.95 in place of 118.17 in the Liberty North sector.

124.95 ? New frequency or maybe a spare ? I've also heard them use 120.20 in the past in this sector as well.

The Liberty North sector works EWR and LGA departures via the northwest departure gates (COATE, NEION, HAAYS, GAYEL). It's not covered on LiveATC but you can confirm the frequency with handoffs from EWR Departure (119.20) and LGA departure (120.40) which are both covered.

124.95 is still in use as of 22:17 local...and for what it's worth, I've also heard KJFK departures get handed off from 135.9 to 118.175 but this seems to happen more later at night.

Yeah from what I've heard it seems common that they combine the Liberty North sector with Liberty East (126.80) when traffic is light or on the weekend/midnight shift.

I took a quick listen off the archives at 1700EDT (2100Z) and at that time they were still using 126.80 in Liberty East and 124.95 in Liberty North. At one point the Newark departure controller caught himself giving out 118.17 by mistake then quickly corrected it to 124.95.

The New York frequency Merry-Go-Round continues.

Ron (or anyone who knows),

On the subject of the New York Tracon, on that radar chart on that wiki page, over the Long Island area it shows 120.05, 118.00, and 125.97. Do these 3 sectors usually combine ? Can you hear the controller on these 3 frequencies, is it usually the same controller ?

That chart also shows a Beads Low 3N sector on 118.95. I've never heard this frequency being used. Have you heard it in use ? Does the controller simulcast on this frequency ?

ATC is simulcasting on all three of those freqs (118.0, 120.05 and 125.975) right now (10:20 local). 125.975 handles traffic further out east on Long Island (for HTO, etc.).  If you listen to the KISP approach feed you'll hear the controller talking to aircraft on that frequency, but not the aircraft.  Those planes are on 125.975.  That feed only lists 118.0 but it also is scanning 120.05.

Thanks for the info. Ron.

And back to the OP, tonight EWR is using 126.70 as the initial departure frequency with the controller still simulcasting on 119.20
