I am a french ATC working on a Euocontrol (FABEC) project called Free Route.
It is supposed to provide several direct routes above FL365. In the end and with the SESAR programme we thing of a true free route airspace with 4D trajectories : compagnies would have a 4D contract and thanks to the SWIM Network/computers this trajectory would be conflict free (equivalent to NextGen project)... No need to say this is not for tomorow.
My question is what's hapenning today in the US :
Can a pilot file a direct routing above a certain FL and have a fuel policy corresponding to that route ?
